Someone here posted the link to the video of the last two laps of the race with Arnoux which I downloaded long ago. It was magnificent.

That's what you call real racing.
And a real hero. |

Oh deary me!!
See?? Why does this have to be at FERRARI of all teams?? Why can't the lot of them (Jean, Ross and the rest) bugger off and work for Williams or something?? |

No, let them keep buggering Ferrari up, so all the sponsors leave Ferrari and they are forced out of F1 to concentrate on sportscars.

It is worth noting that Ferrari team orders were around even then. Villeneuve was supposed to win in San Marino in 1982 and was cruising around quite happily until Pironi decided to ignore all orders and pass him. (Didn't get sacked though). Sadly they never spoke to each other again.

I'm not sure that's strictly the case. As I understood it, GV was ahead at half way and because they were running one-two and there was a reduced field (the FOCA teams failed to race) Ferrari knew they'd only have themselves to race against so they decided to turn the boost down on the cars and let them take a stroll in the park. Pironi, however saw it differently and decided to make a race of it. Sadly GV failed to understand the situation and whilst he was agrieved at what he saw as duplicity on Pironi's part, he took the whole thing too personally. I don't think there'd been any prior agreement to let GV win, I believe it was a case of "he who is ahead at halfway shall win". Pironi was a racer (as was GV) and with all that spare fuel on board he turned the wick up. I believe he was as surprised as most people when GV didn't respond. So in this case a driver actually broke a request from the team rather than accepted the orders. |

I have taken this quote out of the book "Villeneuve,the life of the legendary racing driver", by Gerald Donaldson;
It is about Imola, '82. "After the race,I thought everyone would realize what had happened, but no. Pironi says that we both had engine problems and there were no team orders. And what really ****ed me off was that Piccinini confirmed that to the press, saying there were no team orders. My engine was perfect, and there were team orders. "When Rene (Arnoux) blew up at Imola I took the lead and we got a "slow" sign from the pits. You get a 'slow' sign and that means 'hold position' It's just not true that there are no team orders at Ferrari....Imola was going to be my race because I was in front of Pironi when Arnoux dropped out. If it had been the other way around, tough luck for me...I would not have tried to take the lead away from him. Jesus, we'd been living together at Ferrari for a year and a half. I thought I knew the guy. Our relationship had always been good and I trusted the guy. "People seem to think we had the battle of our lives! Jesus Christ! I'd been ahead of him most of the race, qualified a second and a half ahead of him. Where was my problem? I was coasting those last 15 laps. He was racing. I think I've proved that, in equal cars, if I want someone to stay behind me....well, I think he stays behind. "I guess it looked like I was mad at finishing second. Okay, I'd have been mad at myself for not going quick enough if I'd been plain beaten. Second is one thing, but second because he steals it, that's something else." Enzo Ferrari later made a statement on the matter, saying Pironi did not interpret the signals correctly, and Gilles disappointment was justified. Gilles fully understood the situation. Pironi chose not to, and the result is known to all. It is truly a shame that many of you have not had the chance to see Gilles race, live or on video.There has not been anyone like him since. |

Great pic. Reminds me of the cars on my first Scalextric set!
Mind you, compared to today's cars it looks like he's sitting in a bath tub on wheels! |

Laudaman,
Thanks for that. I don't even know what to say. Note how much room they gave each other, even if they were banging wheels. |
