1984 Group C race AIR

Hey all
Does anyone know anything abut a Group C race at Adelaide Int. Raceway late in 1984. Pretty sure it was a one off sprint race and the last ever Group C race.
From memory, won by Fury and Bluebird.
Anyone?
Thanks

Adelaide International Raceway held the last ATCC round of 1984 (and therefore the last ATCC race run to Group C rules), but certainly not the last Group C race.

Fury did get pole in the Bluebird, but the results were as Downoz mentions. It was actually a pretty good race as well.

There were plenty of Group C races held after then though,

Amaroo - Silastic 300 (AEC#1)
Oran Park - Valvoline 250 (AEC#2)
Sandown - Castrol 500 (AEC#3)
Bathurst - James Hardie 1000 (AEC#4)
Surfers Paradise - Motorcraft 300 (AEC#5)

then

Calder Park - AGP Support race
Baskerville - one off meeting for Group C cars, the last meeting as far as i know.

The last championship race for group C was round 5 of the Australian Endurance Championship at Surfers Paradise, old circuit, held Nov 4th 1984.
Top 6
1. Peter Brock - Commodore
2. Allan Moffat - Mazda
3. Greg Hansford - Mazda
4. Allan Grice - Commodore
5. Andrew Harris - Commodore
6. John Harvey - Commodore

The then new Group A class was won by Colin Bond in an Alfa Romeo GTV6

The very last run for the Group C tourers would possibly have been at the 1984 AGP meeting at Calder on November17,18. as a support race.

As mentioned earlier the last meet was a semi-formal meeting at Baskerville in Tasmania, I think there was a cash prize on offer to get some of the cars to cross the Bass and a few guys wanted a last fun hurrah!

The race at Baskerville in 1984 only 6 cars fronted, Grice and Harrington for roadways, Warren Cullen and Andrew Harris for K Mart, Glen Seton was in the Bluebird and Steve Masterton, falcon. Grice won and the next year was the first year of group A.

It was at Calder, can not remember, but the Aus GP those days were F5000 I think, not the proper F1, they started in 1985 in Adl

Formula Atlantic. Wall-to-wall Ralt RT4s with Cosworth four-pots. Last AGP of its kind with Adelaide beginning the following year.

Not a large field attended the 84 AGP support. Steve Masterton dominated until a spin midway through, Fury in the Bluebird went on to win. HDT attended ( Brock, Harvey ), so did Warren Cullen, Andrew Harris and Fury/Masterton as previously mentioned. From memory not many other big names were there.

It was a combined Group C/A field, Richards drove the Grp A BMW in this race for instance. Not a bad field in terms of runners (over 20 cars), but there was no Johnson or Grice etc...

As mentioned Fury won from Brock. Such a shame Masterton got caught out with lapping a car. This race is often overlooked when it comes to people talking about the Marlboro VKs being 'unbeaten', in this race they were.

This was the last of the 'original' AGPs. Was also the last time an Aussie lead our local GP (John Bowe led the first few laps) until Webber led a few laps in 2006.

That was the one I remember, mainly because(as racer69 pointed out)was the one race Brock VK did not win. Last race for either car, except the won that went to cleland in uk.

I am surprised that the AIR race hasn't been selected for the Classic Australian Touring Car DVD's.

It was probably the best race of the '84 ATCC.

It is one one of the DVD's not sure if it is Vol 3 or 4, but there is a race from AIR on the DVD.
