Gotta Love the Airport

I love the Cleveland round. Plain and simple. Friday qualifying was almost as exciting as some of the races we've seen this year! Think I'm gonna go to it next year.

Varsha and Kendall made a few interesting notes during the qualifying broadcast. All three former Cleveland winners in the starting field drive for Team Green. And daMatta has picked up 12 of the 22 bonus points so far this season. That's like a free fourth-place finish! Well, not really free, he earned them, but you know what I mean.

Can't wait for raceday!

First corner at Cleveland is always exciting... Oriol always created excitement there!

Ah, today, Oriol's 27th birthday!

Hey, Macdaddy,

Let's arrange to meet in Cleveland next year. What about inviting Lee Janotta? He is a local.

Congratulations to Oriol on his birthday.

Revision: daMatta has now scored 13 of 23 bonus points, and is a cool 50 ahead of second-place Bruno. What's going on with this guy? Look at the time diff between him and 2nd-place qualifier Carpentier. 0.430 secs. That's pretty substantial. They showed his pitwall flagpole, displaying all of his pole flags and victory flags, and it's almost full. He's gonna need two by the time this season closes.

How sad is it that Oriol doesn't have a car to drive on his birthday?

I love the airport myself. I'll never forget 1997. Zanardi went through the pits when they were closed and was sent to the back of the pack. He charged through the field, dispatching of deFerran at turn 1 for the lead, and went on to win the race. He looked the goods there last year too, until Max Wilson gave him a flat tyre.

Remember the great wheel-to-wheel, corner-after-corner battle between Tracy and Mansell years ago?

Yeah, the field doesn't seem quite as competitive this year as has been the case in the past. I have a feeling next year's lower cost formula will solve that though...

I really wonder how much of it has to do with the mandatory-pit rule. Good thing or bad thing? Now I'm not so sure.

One more tidbit from the Cleveland broadcast worth mentioning...

Forsythe says his team will "more than likely" be running Reynard chassis next year. He said this even before the victory.

A very forgiving course (except for turn 1) as they pointed out when dwelling on Tony's many mistakes this weekend.

I suppose Townie Bell was relieved that no one was blaming him for the Corner 1 disaster, but he was certainly not a happy boy, was he?

I actually do not like the manditory pit rule. I do not like the idea that teams can not elect to ship a tire change to improve track position. I think that CART should allocate enough Fuel for the teams to run full rich for the whole race, but let the teams decide on what type of stragey to run. AS long as the races are not timed, and teams have enough fuel, things should be good.

Also, maybe make yellow flag pitstops illegal. That would be more interesting that a manditory pit window.

Just my thoughts.

John

Townsend Bell should be replaced. Who do you replace him with when your team can't even produce a winner.
