I think tht startline crash was a repeat of Kimi's in Spain, and demostrates once again the reason why Launch Control is such a terirble thing. Alonso had no chance to react to the problem of Justin stalling and Jos seemingly moving into the wrong part of the track, and contact was inevitable.
He was lucky to get points though, he made at least one other signififcant mistake, and was helped by failures for Trulli, Coulthard, Button, Frentzen, Panis, da Matta and Wilson. Didn't seem like the drive of a future champion, but eveyrone has days like those. Teh determinationa dn fortitude in fighting on to get somethign form it was impressive, if nothing else. |

Like David Hobbes said on the Speed Channel feed: "In racing you just don't ever give up."
Alonso kept on plugging and got the point rather than retiring. |

Yup ALonso is a star!!! i thought he would never be able to get in the top 8 . Wonder what he could have done had he not had the opening crash.
Bet TGF must have had a smile when he lapped ALonso though. |

A legend? That's a bit much for a 22 year old, don't you think? Hell, I havn't even heard MS called a legend in this forum!
But it was a good drive, way to stick with it. |

I agree, Alonso is only at the beginning of the game, what is going to happen next year when Renault has additional Power and Alonso matures a little more.
As I said in a SMS message to friend over the weekend, Renault is practicing for the Aeronautical Aerobics championship for next year, imagine winning both these titles in one year. As for MS being a legend, I do not want to start a war here, but the way his contracts are signed and being part of FIArrari, how can he be called a legend. OK he has a few titles but I cannot remember if he won any of them on his own. It has always been his team mates that have backed him or the FIA punishing other drivers who get too close. Alonso has done it on his own with the help of the complete Renault outfit. |

With respect Gavin, that is all speculation. I very much doubt, in fact I am sure that no-one posting here has any real knowledge of what is in anyone's contract!
Over the years there have been many drivers who have, if the speculation and rumour is based in any truth at all, had similar arrnagements to any MS has had, including, Senna, Prost, and most other 'Number 1s', in any case. Furthermore, we are no more enlightened as to what is in Alonso's contract, as regards teammates, equipment etc. nor what will be in it next year, or the year that he will, surely I hope, win the WDC. At the end of the day, we are only able to make comparisons on the basis of achievement and it is certainly, therefore too early to call Alonso a 'legend'. BTW the use of the word is also incorrect, as it means a traditonal story or myth. I am sure that some would say MS's reputation IS mythical but he and his results certainly are not! |

Fernando is quickly becoming known as a driver who has incredible race pace,in that he can put in consistently quick laps for an entire race without making many errors, particularly major ones. If Renault continue their improvement curve, FA will be in the title chase for sure next season. I expect the new engine rule will present the same problems for all the teams.

Lucky? Yes, but he certainly helped create it with a never ever give up display. Good to see.

The ability to adapt to a difficult car and changing conditions, the temprament never to give up (say, for example, if you're stuck in just one gear!).... sounds like another driver who has done quite well in the last ten years.
