Briggs S. Cunningham 1907-2003
I wanted to say farewell and rest in peace, to a remarkable pioneer. Briggs Cunningham probably did more than anyone else to foster interest in road racing in America in the 1940s. His efforts with cars of his own make made the USA aware of Le Mans as a competition of note.
He truly was a remarkable person, a fine racer, an astute businessman and manager and by all accounts a thoroughbly likeable man. |

Made it to 96 as well. Some interesting cars were produced by his team. The Healey Cadillac f'rinstance.

From the Grand Am website comes news of the passing at age 96 or Briggs Cunningham.
Le Mans entrant and then car builder. A founder of Sports Car Club of America. Winner of yachting's America's Cup. Without Briggs, American road racing may have never developed to the level it has. Rest in Peace, Briggs Cunningham! |

Yes, great thunderous Le Mans cars. The magnificent 1952 C4RK coupe driven by Walters and Carter, which sadly retired, is my favourite Cunningham. Just thought you'd like to know!

I had completely missed the news of Briggs' death. While at age 96, this cannot have been completely unexpected it is important to pause and reflect on what he meant to the sport we follow. Without Briggs, the racing scene in America would have been very different, at least in the 1950s and '60s when the SCCA was beginning to grow and he represented us at LeMans. Alot of Americans owe their start in road racing to his pioneer efforts.
He will be missed but not forgotten. |
