Rear Wheel Covers
2 questions about the rear wheel covers seen on prototypes in the past-why are these not used any more and what was their advantage?

Aero? But I'd imagine they'd be a pain in the pitstop...

Pesonally I love the rear wheel covers.
The XJR-9LM, and Toyota TS010 look much better with them. |

You guys must have LOVED the cars of the early fifties with wheel skirts.
I think they should force the DPs to have hydraulics so they can bounce them up and down as they go down the straights. Bob Last edited by Bob Riebe; 2 Feb 2004 at 19:22. |

I know that a little company that used to be known as Astec who was owned by TWR made 50 pairs of them for just one season for Jag!
I imagine TWR kept them if they weren't damaged and used them the season after, not to sure about that though! Last edited by Duffacus; 2 Feb 2004 at 19:52. |

Theres a company that bought up all of the TWR Group C/IMSA GTP stock, including many wheel covers!
They currently supply many of the TWR Jaguars competing in Historic Group C/GTP. |

They sure look good, but they're a complete pain in the bum during pit stops.
I think they may not be legal anymore though. Someone will have to check that though |

I'm with you on this, gi_gav, wheel covers always make me think Citroen have deployed a BX-based prototype.

Well it's about to become a little more constructive, well, I say that, this isn't really about Rear Wheel Covers to be honest but it is about Jaguar

This was a photo taken last summer when the company formally known as Astec received a Jaguar XJR 9 from Don Law Racing which had been damaged a long time ago and the whole right front side needed to come off and completely rebuilt as the car would be raced in Historic Group C. The chassis was repaired and you can see where it has been rebuilt with Carbon Fiber and Kevlar. This area has been highlighted in a black circle. (Just though I’d share that with you)

You have to wonder how efective they actually were.
A number of the cars in Histric Group C/GTP don't actually run with the covers. |

Is that the XJR-12D that was crashed heavily at Spa in the GroupC/GTP series early last year.
BTW, it is a modified XJR-9 chassis, so may be badged as such despite the mods. |

My dad said it was damaged when it was first raced back all those years and has apperently been in a factory somewhere since. Don Law bought it some time last year. Thats just what the company was told though, it may have been that one you are talking about. I'm not entirely sure.

Would it be better for aerodynamics. Im just trying to get my head round something. If this created just a big space then as the air passed underneath there would be a suction effect making downforce. But with the wheel spinning inside this will bring up turbulent air into the space and surely make lift. I can understand that it may be better for the air around the outside but what about the inside??
