Washing Probans
Hey guys,
I know there is a thread on this every year but i just wondered if some one could help me. Now that the Oulton season has finished i won't be marshalling till December so I've taken the plunge and decided to wash my overalls as they are covered in dirt/oil etc (how pleasant!) If any one out there could give me a few tips on how to wash them it would be much appreciated! Thanks, Katie |

Any non-bio washing powder on a 40 degree wash will be fine. Don't use Persil or Fairy though as they are soap and it affects the Proban treatment. Don't put any bleach or those wonderful little stain removing tabs in with your wash and don't tumble dry them. Remember they'll smell horrible when they are wet so choose a nice blowy day when you can hang them outside to dry!

Hi Katie! If its the Oulton Park overalls your washing not AWS you can use Persil nonbiological washing powder.
Earlier this year I phoned the manufacturers, for washing instructions, and they told me that contrary to popular belief I could use this particular soap powder. |

Glad this thread "popped up" again.
I can never remember how to tell mum to wash them. So it's.......... 40 degrees, non-bio powder but not Persil of Fairy and don't tumble dry. Great, I think mum will remember that. I'm planning on a trip to Oulton next season Katie when the HSCC come to visit, so might bump into you. |

AFAIK - they really should reek to high heaven when wet. There should be a very mild, almost undetectable odour when dry.

Maybe that's just what we've all been told so we'll put up with that lovely "damp proban" smell. It's a conspiracy I tells ya!
Combe, if you're not sure, the best way to check is to hold a lighter or lit match very close to the fabric. It should hold up for around 10 seconds before starting to char. I don't recommend doing this while wearing them though |

Hi Coombe,
I think the reason they have stopped smelling is because you've washed the proban treatment out (proban only lasts 10-15 washes)! Its not the dirt that smells, its the proban! I suggest you stay WELL back if you get a fire! |

My understanding is that praban looses it's effectiveness EVERY time it's washed.
