EBC Brakes racers discount

having had reason to speak to the really helpfull technical guys at EBC it reminded me of there little known discount for racers,

they will give MSA race licence holders who are genuine competitors a very healthy 50% discount on all their pads. it might be worth giving them a call on 01604 583344

I was half interested in EBC pads, now I am a lot more interested.

Got to say they scare the life out of me. I can't get on with them.

Having said that my Ferodo DS3000s did something styrange at Donington.

Might think about a set of discs and pads for my fast road MGB. No I'm not a hairdresser!

some of their older compounds used to need a lot of warming up before they worked, but nothing i couldn't achive with loads of left foot braking on the green flag lap, their new compounds dont need as much heating, and i know several racers with light relatively low powered cars who swear by red stuff.

I suspect my car is somewhat heavier than yours. My experience using left foot braking on the warm up didn't help me at Lodge one year.

As Graham has said (and I've said too in the past) the newer compounds are entirely different, and perhaps you should give them a go, Peter?

Bob Sketchley, the technical man at EBC (and also a marshal) provides very good advice for anyone still with question marks. The 50% discount for racers has always been available, just never publicised, as obviously they don't want too much demand!

Can't be too sure here Peter, but I think some of the yellow compounds were released middle-of-2004. They came in after the ceramic Redstuff were introduced, and that happened in Jan 2004. The brand new 'R' type yellow (1793) was introduced in January this year, which is what I'm using now.

OK I'll give it some thought but I've got two spare sets of DS300F which will do for the rest of the year.

Do you still have to warm them up for three laps then stop before using them in earnest? If so the cost of additional testing should be added to the pad cost because you won't get them bedded properly in 15mins of qualifying.

although ebc classify ther pads into 4 colours each colour could be one of several compounds, make a note of the number that appears halfway down the right side of the lable on the box, that will tell the ebc exactly which pad compound your using.

All of which suggests that its not very safe to buy them. I'm sure Powerstop would be really pleased to hear that.

It seems to me that we are getting a bit of consistency here. Lighter cars such as the Caterhams and Minis probably can use them. Heavier cars such as my Capri and TW's BMW may find it difficult and at the end of the day if you have confidence in Ferodo DS3000's or Mintex M1144 why would you change?

Safety doesn't have a cost benefit ratio.

I'll still look into them for my MGB though because I'm not suggesting they are a bad product, just perhaps not suited to me for racing not least because it sounds like I'd have to test a few compounds to find the right one.

i'm not really suggesting anyone should change i just though t every should be aware of there offer,

re heavy cars i cant really comment my old car weighed 825 kg and with 200bhp and slicks had excellent stopping on EBC's,

my new car is much heavier at 950kg and as yet doesn't stop as well but then thats probably got much more to do with now having 330bhp and a wall of of torque meaning the laws of physics just wont allow it to stop as well, not to mention all my old braking points have now gone out the window as i'm approaching the same corners very considerably faster

Well I am in the process of sorting out some pads and my old girl weighs about 3200ibs with about 420bhp, do they make anchors?

i've today for the first time after using up a stock plie of old compound pads used a set of the lastest yellow stuff, much much better, they didn't need half as much warming up, infact for probably the first time i seemed to be able to stop on cold pads, and are definatly better than the old compounds once warm

Well I have been running Jaguar XJ6 Front calipers on my 1970 Camaro that I am rebuilding and the best quote I could get was an astonishing £145+vat per set (These were the ones previously offered by Rally Design?) of pads and unfortunately EBC don't do them and the Mintex (?) offering by DT are only an intermediate compound. So in the back of my workshop I have a set of pucker huge six pot Willwood calipers with three sets of unused but bedded in pads I bought at a boot sale a while back and they were off a Paris Dakar Ford Ranger and spurred on by the shock of the price of the pads I am now in the process of making up brackets to fit these on the Camaro as the pad value alone by todays standards is over £500! And I get a much larger pad area, half the weight caliper and I can buy pads from Rally Design (and maybe EBC) as and when I need them. God knows what compound the pads are though but must be worth a try!

Have you tried calling Hi-Spec? They do a large variety of pads and I think their calipers use the same type of pads as the Wilwoods. Customer service is woefull, that's the only problem. Paid about £55 for a set of DS3000's for my 4 pots.

Al, try Classic spares at Waltham Cross 01992 716236 for xj6 front pads, they supply all Mintex types at reasonable cost, not sure if he can get Ferodo but he is very helpful. Hi Spec will order what you want but as carsreunited says service is bad to less than useless.

Thanks I will try those, I have almost finished fabricating brackets for one side for the Willwoods and it is looking good, if all goes well I will try to knock out the XJ6 conversion, certainly makes a good mod on a road car or race car come to that, Camaro because the standard sliding front caliper is abysmal. I still need a set of pads for the rear calipers, they are BMW 7 series from around 1980 I guess and the same pad size as a Cosworth Seirra.

I run mintex 1144 Sierra Cosworth (or 4x4) rear pads on my back axle.

These calipers ore the same size as front Sierra brakes Pete, is that what you are using.
