Edsel Ford II: We like how the future looks with Champ Car
Just sharing the love around, spotted elsewhere.
Tonight on Windtunnel: Dave: "C'mon now, Ford's had a long history with Indy, any chance of you coming back and running an IRL program?" Ford: "We're happy with Champ Car, we like the CART (sic) program, we like how the future looks with Champ Car, and I think that's the direction we're going." Dave: "................" Positive words from an important Champ Car partner for a long term future. |

That's great news! I'd be interested to know if Ford want's to remain as the sole engine supplier to Champ Cars or would they mind having some competition starting in '06......

Look at the worldwide exposure ford gets for the cost of a good tv commercial. They have to laugh when they see toyota and honda writing 8 figure checks to teams in the irl.

Ford are quite happy with being the sole engine supplier - and I think it's best for the series that it remains that way.
Manufacturers coming in escalate costs dramatically, then those who're losing pull out and the whole thing's in crisis. |

Why not? Their sponsorship money is probably a tradeoff on the rebuilds. And they're building Chevworths anyway. It probably works quite well for 'em both ways, just the way it sits.

And thats why I can't stand Dave Despain. The guy is obviously biased towards Motorcylces, Dirt track racing, Ovals, IRL and Nascar. In fact one of the few racing series he doesn't seem to care about is OWRS. Dispute it all you want, because I'm sure some of you can come up with several points of why he actually likes Champcar, but I've watched his show many a time and his words speak for themselves.

Petty minded of him, really.
If you enjoy IRL, then OWRS is enjoyable too, I reckon. |

Despain definately has some problems with CART, but I don't know that he hates it. I don't watch every night, but in the past he has had some very harsh critism for the IRL, so I would not necessarly say he's biased regarding open wheel series.
Nice to see Ford publically 100% supporting CART. Think about it, best case scenerio Ford goes to the IRL and fights for second tier. How does that improve one's image. They could quiet easily end up in the back with the Chevys. That's a big risk and in CART there's no risk and very low costs. (no development, long rebuild periods, etc.) |

It is way cheaper for Ford to be in the OWRS than in IRL. Since it's a spec series the costs to build enngines are lower because they can make more. I remember this argument when CART turned into a spec series, and this was one way that someone justified it.

Got to agree with both Kicking Back and Indycool's first statements.... Did I just say that? There are trade offs... At the end of the day, as long as I see champ cars...

I dunno... you'd think so, but in America at least they are so involved with NASCAR publically that you think that Champcars are like a burden to the company.
I'm not saying that is the case, but it has that feeling. Despite whatever Mr. Edsel Ford II said. Jeez I wish I had seen the interview! |

Hey, when a Ford is in the winner's circle every race, why would you leave? Plus what development costs could there be with no competition and a 2+ year old design?

Exactly.
Clearly they're getting a good return on investment which is what it's all about. |
