Lee Petty, patriarch of the Petty clan, passed away today after a protracted illness and an abdominal aneurism. He was 86 years old and one of NASCAR's first great champions. He is credited for ushering in the factory era in NASCAR by bringing in Dodge. My sympathy and condolences go out to the Petty family.

Bad news. Lee always seemed from interviews like he was a real great guy that had a lot of class--a Petty trait. I hope that he was in good enough condition to be able to watch his great grandson start his first Winston Cup race this weekend because that would have made meant a lot to him I am sure. Rest in peace Mr. Petty.
