Are the Kellys really any good?
It's a subject I have wanted to raise for some time. I know that Rick is the current dubious champ and that he has also won Bathurst, but to me he is isn't anywhere near as good a steerer as Tander. And Todd is not a patch on what Skaife was. There just seems to be something missing. Personally, I hope holden keep them. I much prefer to see the likes of Frosty and Whincup in the Ford camp.

I think both Rick and Todd are "solid" drivers...but they do lack the edge that your Lowndes', Skaife's, Tander's and Ambrose's have. The Fire inside I guess.

I have always thought Rick was flattered by the cars he was given to drive. Nothing he has done in the last two years has changed my mind. Todd seems to have a bit more ability to drive around a cars' problems than Rick.
I think they would be journeyman drivers at best if there was not a relationship to the team owner. |

i say they are both good driver and most of the time will bring the car home straight (Todd more so), but in saying that if they are put in a tuff position like Lowndes on the weekend they would do that their progress would of been slower and probably wouldn't have got that high.

Both Rick and Todd are very good drivers but they just cant seem to get that extra bit out of the car when it isnt at its best unlike lowndes, skaife,Tander,And Ambrose when he was here

Good, but not great. Ideal co-drivers, but not stars in their own right

Ask yourself this ... if they did not have a rich dad and Front Running cars their entire career, would they have achieved anything?
Would Rick have won bathurst without Murf? Hardly Would Todd have won without Skaife? He could barely keep up with Warren Luff in the Pirtek that year ... Todd is terribly inconsistent and Rick cannot pass a genuine contender without hitting him. They are not in the same league as Skaife, Lowndes, Murphy or new young guns like Frosty, Whincup and Holdsworth ... |

Todd on the otherhand, I have to agree wholeheartedly with you deeks, he has proven to be terribly inconsistent, and only when all the planets within each universes line up is he a force to be reckoned with... And agree with the Bathurst comment, Bathurst 05 was all Skaife. Every other co-driver blew him away, what 'real' excuse is there for that? |

I think they can both be bloody quick drivers, Todd more so than Rick, they just seem very hot & cold. Mind you, almost the entire field has shown flashes of brilliance, It's just some people show it more consistently...
Rick's consistency is more of a case of other people getting in to trouble as opposed to any significant talent on his behalf... |

Obviously they are good because they get the job done.
Even Brighty can't do much out of a top car. Maybe it's more a question of are the veteran drivers stuck with slower cars as good as the Kellys, do the veterans have less top fives/podiums/wins then they probably should have? Bargwanna, Wilson, McConville etc. The top 10 pace by Bargs in the ex-Forbes or Ritter chassis is some sort of true brilliance. |

Q: Are the Kelly's really any good?
A: Not in my view Handed the very best cars from the day they hit the race track. Learned from the best blokes. Learned the process. Can flog around all day doing the same kind of pace. Cannot pull laps out of their bum (ala Frosty) because that inner skill aint there. Would be great in a 24hr race. Consistent. But crashy. Wouldnt hire them. |

When you drive a car that can lap 10 seconds faster than any other car in the field, whilst being driven at 8/10th's, you don't have to take as many risks or push the car as hard.

Was talking about the Munro, but the WP VE's might have been the same earlier in the year.
