Audi particulate filter
Will Audi now show us what 24 hours of particulate filter looks like?
I'm intrigued - the thing has proven its worth in the race now. I'd like to see why it is so unique. This marketing horse ain't dead yet! |

Its not made by Audi - there are pictures of it and its housing in the back of the R10 in the next (august) issue of Racecar Engineering, and brief explanation of how it works - after the issue comes out I'll post a more detailed explanation online somewhere but to get all the details you'll have to wait.
though there is some info here http://www.mulsannescorner.com/news.html if you scroll down the page |

Yeah I had noticed that before but was hoping for a bit more, which should be in the RCE.
Cheers |

I've seen a few pictures of it. From the outside it is nothing special. And in many ways it isn't special, at least in the context of racing.
They may have developed it so that it is more suitable for racing, but its aim isn't to make the car go faster, or even to make it quieter. It is to aid the car to meet emissions regulation, specifically particulate emissions. The law is being tightened in Europe (and the world) and future cars will need devices like this to meet new EURO 4,5, etc... regulations coming in. I think it is good that Le Mans takes these regulations seriously. Afterall a prototype is meant to be the future, at least in spirit. Marketing? Well Audi have made it work in a race, but as it will be required by law I'm not sure there is much marketable ground here. Yes, we have a car with an extra serviceable part!? There is some milage in it though, I guess. |

So you don't think there is anything particularly unique on the inside? Just more cfm potential to match the engine airflow?
They didn't clean it out or service it during the race, did they? You and I wouldn't fall for the marketing of it but the mums and dads that buy Audis might be easily convinced of its brilliance. |

Chemically its very trick and quite experimental. Dunno if Pug have this tech yet but its certainly got much lower back pressure than the original one run at sebring

Dow has a press kit about their diesel particulate filter on http://automotive.dow.com/automotive...s/presskit.htm
Especially this leaflet is interesting. Some of the benefits (according to marketing):
