Having looked at the incident several times i think it was just a case of Ralf taking the wrong line in to the corner & losing the car & ending up in the wall.

A bad mistake it looks to have been, as I watch the replays on tape.
Lucky boy.......a testament to the standards in safety nowadays. It's quite feasible that had the accident been six or seven years ago, he'd be leaving Indy in a pine box. |

It is an odd place ot make a mistake, I was under the impression it was an easy corner.

Every corner is easy if you get it right Adam
Just seems that he went in too low. Last edited by Mr V; 20 Jun 2004 at 19:25. |

hang on - nobody knows as nobody saw the actual start / cause of the accident.
and williams are not going to say its a puncture in front of the world's press. That's the way F1 PR works. |

I think they will say what happened - when they know.

Rather worryingly if you look at the Sutton Images pics of the crash via the ITV F1 site it looks like Ralfs visor is wide open during the accident

I can't honestly see Rafe, or indeed, any other driver managing to see where he's going with his visor open at 150 MPH.

If you look closely at the TV pictures it flipped open as he hit the wall.

Yep, that visor was open during the crash.
You don't even have to look closely to notice it. |

The visor is sticking up practically vertical as if quite a lot of force has pushed it up that high.

"However, with Michelin now revealing that Ralf's accident had been caused by his Williams collecting debris from the first lap pile-up despite that incident also prompting the safety car to be deployed so that the stewards could clear the circuit, DC may have reason to change his mind a second time."

You may all be glad to know that Ralf has been discharged from hospital
He is now on his way home to Austria to recover. A statement from Williams says "Ralf is well, but has a bruised back and strained back muscles." He will not be participating in testing this week and his participation in the French Grand Prix is far from decided. |
