Local charities will benefit from the Midget Race of Champions to be held on Saturday night of the Chili Bowl. Ford Focus Zetec powered midgets will be piloted by guest racers with proceeds going to charities.

Chili Bowl management announced today the ten charities that will be a part of the much anticipated First Annual Cherokee Casino Ford Focus Midget Race of Champions Presented by Ford of Tulsa. The inaugural Race of Champions, developed to provide awareness and financial support to a number of charities located in Oklahoma, will be run prior to the 17th Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals finale on January 11, 2003.

The ten locally-based charities selected include the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma, the Parent Child Center of Tulsa, the Children’s Medical Center Foundation, the Little Lighthouse Foundation, the AIDS Coalition Pantry Program, the Salvation Army, Special Olympics, Shriners, Big Brothers & Sisters and Crime Stoppers.

Ten championship drivers from various national and regional series have been selected to compete against each other in equally powered state-of-the-art racecars on the famous Tulsa Expo ¼-mile dirt track. The drivers selected and the charity each will represent is as follows:

Tony Stewart, NASCAR Winston Cup champion and defending Chili Bowl winner (Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma)

Danny Lasoski, 2001 World of Outlaws champion (Parent Child Center of Tulsa)

Brett Hearn, multi-time DIRT Modified champion (Children’s Medical Center Foundation)

Scott Bloomquist, UDTRA and UMP Late Model champion (Little Lighthouse Foundation)

J.J. Yeley, 2002 USAC Silver Crown champion (AIDS Coalition Pantry Program)

Dave Darland, 2002 USAC Midget champion (Salvation Army)

Tim Crawley, 2002 American Sprint Car Series national champion (Special Olympics)

Ron Capps, Two-time NHRA Bud Shootout winner (Shriners)

Gary Scelzi, Three-time NHRA Top Fuel champion (Big Brothers & Sisters)

Mr. Ford Focus Chili Bowl Challenge Champion (Crime Stoppers)

Thanks to all the sponsoring groups for making this happen.
