Dick Johnson Racing Falcon EB
In issue 133 of Australian Muscle Car, there is an article on the birth of Supercars back in 1992 and the politics involved at the time.
It was a wonder that the Confederation against Motorsport, didn’t go with everyone having to run Russian Lada’s running Leyland V8’s They make mention of the DJR Falcon EB, that had been built for Bathurst 1992 and then scrapped by the team. Seemed to be an expensive exercise to scrap a race car? Was it sold off an ran as a Sports Sedan, or sold to some punter as a road car? |

It seems it was never scrapped as such, and spent much of its life as a show car, before nearly 15 years later heading to a club racer in WA where it indeed finally became a Sports Sedan. Quote:

Promotional photos with alternative aero kit: The car (EB2?) which raced at Adelaide 1992 which used the same aerokit as the Peter Jackson car: Quote:
Having a provision for 5.0 NA vs 2.0 turbo would have also allowed Sierras to continue, perhaps with a conversion to four door Sapphire bodyshells in line with the new four door regulatory direction. Last edited by V8 Fireworks; 12 Dec 2022 at 12:21. |

Johnson started building the car before the rules were set in stone, he went the wrong way and the car was illegal
Not entirely his fault, it was a rough road getting the final ruleset in place Because Holden and ford didn’t want it, and if they weren’t happy then neither were Channel 7 and Shell Not that I recall any request like that, but Holden and ford whinging is what got that whole formula up and running, the M3’s horrendously hobbled for 1993 and abolished any skerrick of hope that other manufacturers could compete in a series with them at that time. It was a successful formula, but the way it was introduced was a disgrace |

In the late 80s / early 90s there was a test day held at Bathurst a day or so after the last round of the ATCC at Oran Park in August, DJREB1 was debuted at that test in 1992.

While GSR built their first Falcon to the existing ruleset and conventions allowing the existence of a homologated Holden VN Commodore Group A..

I believe this car lives in a shed at Wanneroo Raceway and is pushed out most club race days to get some sun.

Not that you ever bother yourself with the big picture or the facts, wanting only to push the same tired old V8 hating wheel barrow. Nissan stopped producing cars in Australia in 1992 and regardless of the rule changes, were highly unlikely to keep pumping millions into supporting a race team. Meanwhile, Holden were offering support to Gibson to run Commodores. Sorry, that doesn't fit your story line but the immediate success of the category and the fact it has been running for nearly 30 years now suggests they made the right choice. |

BMW kept sponsoring their team until 1997. They had to move from the ATCC to the Australian Super Touring Championship instead due to lack of support from ATCC rule makers.
Where was the provision to support BMW's intent to enter the Australian Touring Car Championship, be it with drawing up rules to accommodate a 540i (notably with a V8!) or for some other BMW vehicle? |

Not to say it hasn't seen the light of day, but I've never seen this car out, and I go to a reasonable number of meetings there, and check the rest out on Natsoft. Mr Gill has been running hard in the Saloon Cars ( 6cyl ) for a number of years, and doing quite well. |

OK. So Mr Gill sold it to Mr Brocklehurst? Then possibly on to someone else now? I didn't make it to the last round unfortunately, but will keep my eyes peeled next time. It's a shame that such a significant car ( and many others, whether significant or not ) are languishing in sheds for years, with no true hope of ever seeing the track with their current owners ( even though they all tell you different ). I ended up buying a Sports Sedan from NZ and had it shipped to Perth because no one here will sell you their garage queen, because "I'm going to get it running and back on the track one day", which we all know almost never happens. And if they ever do finally decide to sell, the car has been sitting so long everything is totally rooted and the car needs a FULL strip and rebuild, yet they want race-ready money for it because Brock / Johnson / Moffat walked past it in the pits in 1982.

They were made to feel unwanted and the Bathurst podium debacle finished off any desire for them to stay. Worst of all Australian motor racing acted as if they didn’t care.. |
