Lipstick/Bullet camera roll cage mount
I see DT sell them for a hefty profit, pg 308 item 5, around £107 + the dreaded VAT.
Does anyone know if they're available else where on-line, for less? I've tried searching the net, but not had much success. TIA Graham |

Couldn't find one from else where, so grudginly ordered one from DT, and they didn't have all the bits in stock. Must be a popular item.

Graham, I a have been looking at buying a camera etc for this purpose and have found a lipstick camera advertised on the net but not sure of the best solution to record to, are you using a standard video camera?

I have a sony hi definition bullet camera, and it is now mounted in the car using the Ruland camera mount from DT. I have a JVC MiniDV camcorder which the wife uses to film me with, and I need another now to install in the car. Problem is, finding a miniDV camcorder with analog AV input, and a remote control. Canon do a camera with AV in, but no remote. Only seems JVC sell remotes. Otherwise I could just press record in the paddock, then queue and compete, then press stop when back, so the footage would last 5 mins max for a sprint/hillclimb, which would then be easily editable. I'll post my findings soon. I may go for the Canon MV700i which at < £400 is perfect for the job apart from the lack of remote. You need to purchase a foam case too, to protect the camera. I'll update this posting soon with more details.

http://www.ruland.com/met_colr.html shows the bits that you need if you wish to make your own mount from the bits. The DT kit is a tad expensive (naturally).
Basically, you'll need to source two components: The One-Piece Clamp Style Collar which the bullet camera mounts inside, then a Two-Piece Split Style Collar with appropriate inside diameter for your roll cage (eg 38mm). Then you need to connect the two together, with a ball joint/swivel mount so the camera can be aligned. Suspect the parts can be sourced from a UK supplier. DT price is around £130 inc VAT for the three parts. I'll get the part numbers and prices listed for those who want to do a bit of DIY. Hmm, www.rswww.com sell shaft collars in mild steel, the right dimensions, for approx £11 for the two collars. I smell a rat! Last edited by graham blackwell; 19 May 2004 at 05:43. |

Looks like the lightest/cheapest camcorder for use with a bullet camera is the JVC GR-DX28 MiniDV for £325 inc. which comes with AV/IN and FireWire, and remote control. I've just ordered one, and will put my findings on my site over the coming weeks. Just need to buy a housing for it now.

B-Hague have supplied Channel 4's Driven in the past. Their mounts are solid and versatile, but not as expensive as Tweeks. I was also going to sugest rfconcepts.co.uk for bullet cameras

This is an interesting subject, and I would like to see if anyone can shed some light on a problem that I have - I have brought the lipstick camera and the mountings for it to plug into a MiniDV camcorder.
In order to protect the camcorder and the battery pack for the lipstick camera I have purchased a tough plastic case from Jessops (their Cam Case 40 product) which is just the right size but I need to find a way of attaching it to the car in a way that it will get through scrutineering OK. It will be used in saloon cars. Could anyone with any experience of this make any suggestions, or a different safe (and scrutineer-legal) way of attaching the camcorder and battery pack to the car? Thanks, guys. |

If you have a cage, get some ratchet type tie down straps, with a 200~300 kg load rating, and strap it to the cage, preferably in the rear of the car, and not directly behind your seat.
If you do not have a cage, mount some eyelets in the seatbelt mounting points, and use them. |

I've just cancelled the order for the JVC GR-DX28. Turns out that the website incorrectly said it supports analog input. In fact, it is the DX37, DX57, DX77 and DX99 that support this feature. Internetcamerasdirect don't have any of the above in stock, but pixmania.com do again, for a reasonable price.
I'm placing my camcorder case either in the door bin for the rear passengers (next to the filler cap on the Mk1 Fiesta) or underneath my seat. I'm getting the bullet camera mount scrutineered at Aintree on Saturday, then the camcorder (when I get one) and case at the next suitable event. I'm trying to get it all sorted for Shelsley on 3rd July, but not having much success at the moment. |

Hope it's ok to direct link, but why don't you use a a deck for the recorder? (You could probably pick one up for a bit less on the Old Kent Road). It's similar equipment to what most of the TV companies use and the same equipment I used in the mid-1990's for FFirst, FFord Zetec and F3. Produces great pictures. Look at this puppy. Cheaper than the Goodmands and records from AV-Input (eg from a bullet camera) in MPEG4 format, straight to removable medai, and has USB so can be connected to laptop/PC for downloads etc.

Just ordered a PVR-A1 from www.directfrom.com They had 13 in stock this morning. Will have video results from Shelsley on the web early next week. Captures at 320x240 so quality should be OK for emailing etc.

The PVR-A1 arrived this morning, and I have to say its a very impressive bit of kit for 110grammes.
Comes with an application so you can drag and drop videos on to it for playing back, and it has a analogue input for composite video, and stereo audio, which it records at MPEG4 quality at 320x240 resolution. I'll hook it up to the bullet camera on the car tonight to prove the concept. Basically, I'll line up at the start, press record, stick the device in my pocket, climb the hill, then remember to press stop! Hopefully the quality should be OK. Haven't checked out the camera mounting for vibration yet though.

Well, I'm pleased to report that it worked very well on Saturday. Recorded all four runs up the hill, but it ran out of memory on my 4th climb, which was also my quickest run at 37.6seconds. The clip from my 1st timed run (38.38s) is now available for download from
