Rounds 5 & 6: revised calendar. Iowa IndyCar 250s, Newton, Iowa. July 17-18.
Rounds 5 & 6: revised calendar. Iowa IndyCar 250s, Newton, Iowa. July 17-18.
This weekend's event wail be the second double header in as many weekends. The last time that happened was in 1968, when USAC sanctioned the series, with rounds 15 & 16, the Indy 200 on July 28th and rounds 17 & 18, the Langhorne Twin 100 on July 4th, with the double headers taking place on the same day The last time there were back to back double headers but not on consecutive weekends, was in 1979 the first CART sanctioned season, with rounds 5 & 6, the Trenton Twin Indy on June 10th and rounds 7 & 8, the Norton Twin 125 on July 15. As in 1968, the double headers took place on the same day. The AAA, (American Automobile Association) held it's first race in Iowa at the Tri-State Fair Grounds, in Burlington on July 9, 1915, with a distance of 100 miles (160 km). The AAA also hosted events at Des Moines Speedway in Valley Junction, on a one mile (1.60 km) wooden board track, in 1915 and 1916. The track though was closed and dismantled soon after. Construction of the current speedway began towards the end 2005 and was completed in July 2006. It is modeled after the Richmond International Raceway, with a track width of 60 feet and 12-14 degree compound banking in the turns. The front stretch features 10 degrees of banking and the backstretch has 4 degrees of banking. Iowa Speedway was the first track to install SAFER Barrier around the track's perimeter and to subsequently use the second generation of the barrier, which doesn't use a concrete wall behind the energy absorbing structure. The first major event to be held at the venue, was also the Indy Racing League's inaugural Iowa Corn Indy 250, on June 24, 2007, which was won by Dario Franchitti, driving a Dallara IR05-Honda HI7R V8 for Andretti Green Racing. From 2014, the race distance was increased to 262.5 miles (422.45 Km) or 300 laps. Iowa Speedway is the shortest track on the IndyCar calendar, at 0.875 miles (1.408 Km) long, with an average lap time of under 18 seconds. Qualifying is decided by a two-lap speed average. Track Layout: Length: 0.894 miles - 1.408 km Turns: 4 Lap record: Helio Castroneves, July 12, 2014 17.2283 seconds, 186.809 mph (300.64 km/h). Team Penske, Dallara DW12-Chevrolet Indy V6. Thanks for the intro and thanks for the heads up, I had completely missed the first race is "today'ish" (the broadcast starts 3 am my time). As I'm getting old I think I'll just set the TiVo to record it and watch it while having breakfast tomorrow

I can't get Indycar on TV so there's nothing to record. It's a stream or nothing. I don't think i'm going to stick around until 03:00 just hoping that I can find a stream. Got one for Road Am 2, not for Road Am 1 -- but the timing for those races was much more favorable. |

Road America had a Saturday and a Sunday race. I'm asking about the last race on a Friday.

I googled, IndyCar races held on a Friday, and it came up with today's race. So, not wanting to trawl through every season, I'm going to make an educated guess and say this is the first IndyCar race to be held on a Friday.

The Indianapolis 500 was originally held on May 31 (but not on Sunday). The last one on a Friday was in 1969.

Daly gives Carlin their first IndyCar pole for Race 1, while last year's pole sitter Simon Pagenaud had a fuel problem, which kept him in the garage.

Feel like I'm ready for short track night fun this evening, 3 hours of Roadkill with the Blasphemi rebuild in parking lots before the race. Cigar and Bulleit 12 year rye on the porch, thanks for the iPad pro COA, it's been nice on the porch with streaming.

Conor has bounced around so much he feels like he's in the group with Colton and Pato not the group with Marco and Newgarden.
Daly has checked out early Edit, must have caught traffic, failing back fast from 2 seconds to half in 3 laps Edit again, Daly picked up some cinder blocks cause damn he's falling |

Tire deg is F1 super soft tire levels. Fuel can go 90 laps I think they said but tires seem to be done at 40-50

An unusual number of mistakes with the pit stops.

And the commentators curse hit Power. No cautions just but the break and then.
Power in to the marbles, looks like wheelnut didn't get set. Then wheel got suck and he couldn't get out so quick. Wow that steering wheel was going crazy after the outside front tire got grip on the track again |

Power into the wall, first FCY. He should have changed tyre strategy.

Waived off restart and Herta in to the fencing over Veekay
Colton rode Veekay's aeroscreen (first report was aeroscreen, looks like he rode the roll structure like a ramp on replay) damn that was close to vicious. The Safer get him just out of the fence and possibly saved that car and Herta from much worse Looks like Ericsson took an end plate to his screen too. Be interesting to see if NBC caught the pit stop to see where it hit. Last edited by broadrun96; 18 Jul 2020 at 02:30. |
