Latest word on the grapevine is that we will have a foreign driver this year. Russian tintop specialist Boris Schulmeister will race for TCR, with backing from Russian comglomerate ITERA.

from www.cliocup.com

Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent hosts the first official ELF Clio Renaultsport UK Cup test of the year this Wednesday with the current list of 18 registered drivers set to increase ahead of the first round of the season next month.

Front-running outfit Xcel Motorsport will field a four-car assault on the series with leading Clio Cup racers Eoin Murray (Dublin) and Oli Wilkinson (Solihull) to be joined by Neil Waterworth (Norden, Rochadale) and Charlie Butler-Henderson (Royston).

Mardi Gras Motorsport has announced it will run two cars, with a view to adding a third, for Beckenham’s Ed Pead and Cornishman John George (Par). Pead finished an impressive sixth overall in last season’s championship and looks likely to be one of the title favourites this year.

West Midlands-based Total Control Racing has signed Irishman Jonathan Fildes (Trim, Co.Meath) and Kevin Lloyd (Wolverhampton) while also preparing a third car for ex-Volkswagen racer Nick Adcock (Bromyard, Hertfordshire) who will enter his Clio under the name of Raw Media Racing.

The 2003 ELF Clio Renaultsport UK Cup will see Surrey teenager Tom Onslow-Cole (New Malden) compete with a family-run car as the youngest ever driver in the history of any of Renault’s one-make championships.

The former karter, who finished fifth in last year’s BRSCC T-Car Championship, celebrates his 16th birthday in May so will therefore only be permitted to make his Clio Cup debut at the Silverstone round of the series on June 6th/7th/8th.

Leicestershire’s Team Griffin Racing moves into its second year in the championship with team owner Julian Griffin (Fleckney) and Paul Maguire (Salisbury) looking to build on a successful winter series where both secured respective best-ever race results of fourth and third.

Mark Davies, vice-champion of the 2002 ELF Clio Renaultsport Winter Championship, will again enter his family-run car into the championship and will be hoping to mount a serious title challenge as he bids to build on his first-ever Clio Cup race win, achieved at Donington Park in November.

Vince Martin (Epping, Essex) will continue to run under the Martin Motorsport banner while Lincolnshire’s Martin Johnson (Alford) will again compete as part of Boulevard Team Racing.

Former Mini Miglia and Mini Seven Championship winning team SpeedEquipe Motorsport debuts in 2003 and will field two cars – one for ex-Mini Miglia and Mini Seven Champion Ian Curley (Marden, Kent) and the other for former Mini and Ford Fiesta racer Rob Cullum (Bristol).

Tim Sugden Motorsport, meanwhile, will enter one car in the 2003 championship for the winner of this year’s Michelin Renault Scholarship. The final of the annual contest will be held at the Croft circuit, near Darlington, on Friday.

Scholarship winner is Martin Brackenby, an ex Karter. It was between him and Gordon Sheddon but Martin won in the end. Good luck to him.

From WWW.cliocup.com
EX-CLIO CHAMP BUXTON MAKES SURPRISE RETURN

Former ELF Clio Renaultsport UK Cup champion Daniel Buxton (Hartford, Cheshire) is to make a surprise return to the series this year having signed a late deal with Boulevard Team Racing.

The 25-year old, Clio Cup title winner in 2001, was hoping to finalise a British Touring Car Championship drive for the coming season until a sponsor pulled out at the 11th hour leaving him facing the prospect of a year on the sidelines.

Fortunately, however, Daniel has managed to strike a deal with Boulevard to contest the full ELF Clio Renaultsport UK Cup championship for the fourth time. Having missed official pre-season testing, Buxton will get his first run out in the car at Snetterton next week ahead of the first round of theseries.

Commenting on the deal he said: "The team wants to do well this season, as do I, and I'm sure we can - I'm here to win races and hopefully mount a strong challenge for the championship. I've not been out in the car yet but hopefully it shouldn't take us too long to get the set-up we want.

"A touring car drive was pretty much sorted for this year but the sponsor pulled out at the last minute which really threatened to ruin the year for me. So, I'm really grateful to Martin, Cliff and everyone at Boulevard for giving me this late opportunity to join the Clio grid again - I'm sure it'll be a good year with some good results."

Boulevard's Cliff Johnson said: "We spoke with Danny at the Rockingham test and he mentioned the problems he was having so we worked on sorting a deal out. The team is looking forward to this season very much and Danny's involvement will definitely help move the team forward.

"It's obviously early days but I'm confident we stand a good chance of having a good crack at winning the championship. We couldn't have asked for anyone better in the car and I'm sure that Danny will add a bit more spice and excitement to the title race."

Its a shame Danny never made it into the BTCC this year. Surely now one of the favourites for the clio title this year.
