2021 ARG S5000 Championship
The 2021 ARG S5000 championship kicks of this weekend (Jan 24th to Jan 26th) at Symmons Plains in Tasmania.
After a couple of races in 2019 and a couple of sessions at the aborted 2020 AGP, the V8 openwheelers are set to return. While not a larger field, hopefully it will be a competitive field. |

Very nice. But only 5 cars entered so far. Unfortunately no Barrichello or Fisichella...

I hope the series does well...open wheelers can have a tough time gaining traction in some quarters of Aussie Motorsport...(pun intended!)

I'd rather a combined Formula Libre - F2, 3, superannuated FHolden and the like. But I've been married a long time and I'm used to not getting what I want. Kramer |

I cant wait for this series to begin, if I'm ever in the position of running a team, it would be a squad of s5000.
Lets hope it gets good reviews and coverage. 11 entries I believe, hopefully picks up on the mainland. |

I'm not confident of this class flourishing. The only way I see it can is if it's a cost effective stepping stone series. When I say "stepping stone series", I mean straight to F1 and Indycar, not S5000 - GP2/Indy Lights - F1/Indycar.
It could also be a better stepping stone for Supercars (Similar to how FHolden/Brabham was) than Super 2. But then that would eat into Super 2, so that would be an interesting development. |

11 cars at symmonds
the cars look and sound great and are fast. They look (and definitely sound) better than f1. As to not a stepping stone.. well it is step up from formula ford maybe they need to re introduce "driver to europe" or arrange that the series winner gets a track day in f3 or f2 in europe Strange to race on a monday thats not a public holiday |

Not personally convinced about S5000 yet - but we've had so few race meetings with them taking part due to Covid so we'll all be able to get a better idea of what they're really like this year (hopefully). |

I enjoyed the S5000's...the only slight criticism was that some could say that they are just V8 Supercars with out a Sedan body...
I know in these days of parity/level playing fields and like the old Carnival Barkers used to shout "Roll Up! Roll Up! Everyone wins a prize!"...maybe they should allow some freedom with body/aero design? waiting for the pile on wrt to series costs and interchangeability of parts...and only the well-heeled with have access to wind tunnels etc etc etc and Ohhhh by the way...if it can work for Historic F1 why not S5000? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histor...e_Championship |

That way you can still compete in a national level class on tv, and trade off being an underdog, |

Interesting weekends racing in the S5000 class at Phillip Island.
2 dry and one (very) wet races. Interestingly the wet race didn't provide the viewing on TV you might expect, and that fans look forward too, not because of the action but simply you just couldn't see it through the spray on the TV. Mixed set of results but promising in the talent exposed and the build up for the rest of the series. Good to see Alf Costanzo being given the honour of presenting the Trophy after the final race. |

Small addition to that, he presented the Alf Costanzo Trophy. |

A tough race, agreed the tv probably didn't do it justice, but that's why you go to the track. Great drive by Cooper Webster to hold off Thomas Randle in the wet, will be quite the confidence boost.

With only one round remaining Joey Mawson has taken the lead in the championship.
Randle had a shocking weekend, and Macrow's was not much better. |

Randle's weekend wasn't helped by the first race balls up, and subsequent parking at T5.

FYI ARG in this instance stands for 'Australian Racing Group' and they in turn own / control the S5000 series recently launched in Australia. They also own the rights to run TCR in Aus and other series

Perhaps a better thread title might be "Australian Gold Star/ S5000"

The grid interviews remind me of Formula Holden coverage in 1991!
