Tony Stewart will replace Dario!
I just read on the rpm.espn.com website that Tony Stewart will DEFINATELY be replacing Dario Franchitti in the Indy 500!!! Isn't that great!?!? I'm SO HAPPY! It will be great to see him back, even though he had originally said that he wasn't going to run the 500. I was starting to think he would never come back!

I was thinking the same, bit i suppose when he raced in 2001 he hadn't driven one since 1999, and he did alright.
Great news though, and great news for the race. |

I think he'll be able to readjust immediately. He's a great driver, amde his name in the IRL, and should be in a position to challenge for the win.
NASCAR runs a pretty full schedule, so the race and its 2 qualifying days would probably create at least 2 clashes with NASCAR, presumably leading Tony to do his marathon effort of crossing the country to do two long races - another 1100 mile day on the cards? Presumably he wouldn't replace Dario in the other IRL events? Would AGR just run 2 cars, or would Mikey postpone his retirement (that strikes me as being quite undignified). |

Well I hope its true. Has AGR or Stewart issued a press release?
This means Tony would have to lay off the Cheeseburgers and Pizzas to stay in shape. I hope he does it for one of those fast honda engines! |

I bet Chevy's gonna love this!
This is why you don't sign personal services contracts with manufacturers. |

Ok, now they're saying on the SPEED website that Tony won't be doing the 500... NOOOOOO!!! It was just a rumor!?!? I need to stop believing everything I read... That's awful! Does anyone know what's really going on?

At NASCAR.com Tony says he's flattered by the rumors but that he'll keep himself to the 600 this year.

So what, Tony Stewart doesnt show up... whoopie doo..
There are a mountain of CART and other single seater drivers who would give their left nut (well all except Danica) to drive for A-G at Indy Why limit yourself to a temper-prone NASCAR hack? |

I don't think that I would call Tony Stewart a Hack ! He is a pretty damn good oval driver or he wouldn't have won the Winston Cup Championship. As I remember, he did alright when he used to run IRL. I completely agree with you on him being hot tempered.

Tony Stewart is a hack in the sense that IRL cars arent his full time gig... his real love is NASCAR and yes he won the series last year in that class, but if Stewart is deciding to run because someone isnt showing up, and thus being on a hiding to nothing without testing, and the Charlotte date clash, it isnt the most professional way to want to run an entry to the US's biggest single motor race!

Tony Stewart will not race in the Indianapolis 500 next month, the defending NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion revealed Monday.
"It's flattering to know that my name still comes up this time of year as someone teams want to have in their car at Indy," Stewart said in a statement regarding the rumor. "But as I've said from the beginning of the season, I am not going to compete in the Indianapolis 500, and my reasons are the same. I need to take care of what I signed up to do here with Joe Gibbs Racing. There are 200 employees at Joe Gibbs Racing, making all sorts of sacrifices to provide me with everything I need to go out and win races. And when you go back and forth between Indy and Charlotte, it puts a strain on the entire team. As much as my heart wants to do it, I can't justify putting my personal ambitions ahead of the sacrifices made by my race team." http://sports.yahoo.com/irl/news?slu...v=st&type=lgns |

Max Papis!? Really? I was thinking maybe Penske would offer him a ride, but Penske also said he'd only run two cars if Gil couldn't race- which would be one for Helio and one for Alex Barron.

Max ran last year, and is driving the JML Panoz at Le Mans...
He'll need to do a crash course to set it up for Pole Day... Le Mans PQ is May 4th... The indianapolis Star says Robbie Gordon is considering an offer to run Dario's chassis for AGR... Hope he does...Gordon is fast at Indy, and he wants to do the Double... |

I read a rumour that AGR asked Reubens Barrichello to run at Indy. However Ferrari vetoed it and so Robbie Gordon got the drive.

I would have thought they would have hired a driver who can run a number of races to replace Franchitti, rather than just the one race that Gordon can do, as they will have to find another driver to replace Franchitti for the 3 or so races after Indy.
Next question, who is going to qualify for Kanaan? |
