Wouldn't it be great? F1 drivers in IROC
There used to be several f1 drivers in the International Race of Champions. (IROC) Equal cars, no team support, road courses and ovals. If F1 drivers are so good, why dont they prove it given a chance. Sans the superficial reasons. (Money, travel, America doesnt have their kind of wine.) Wouldn't you like to see f1 drivers in an all out fight with the best. The series is lacking a bit, but is still one of the most coveted championships in the US. Add a rally driver, and Lemans champ. A real fight

IMO, I think that if they did particiipate, that they would be disappointing in their performances. Therefore making the series look even more like a joke here in the U.S.

When IROC started, it was really something to see. Porsches at Riverside with F1, Indycar, sports car, touring car, and NASCAR drivers all duking it out.
Nothing like that anymore, it's really viewed as a joke anymore in road racing circles. |

Thank you Lee! It is basically aplace for the NASCAR boys to go and beat on each other some more. They still have Al Jr., Eddie Cheever for cryin out loud but no Jeff Gordon or Paul Tracy or...you get the picture. Remember the first year or two they had identical Porsches and the roundy-round boys REALLY went roundy-round! Trailing throttle oversteer, anyone?
Right now this whole thing is a media "event" no more and no less with the venues and the cars well suited to our visitors from "WWF on Wheels." Pardon me, my bias is showing! |

I seem to remember that Martin Brundle did it a few years ago, and did pretty well until the 'Good Old boys' of NASCAR deceided they didn't like this foreigner beating them and took him out in the last race.

If IROC was really a International Race of Champions, it would be awesome if it looked like this.
Drivers: F1 - Micheal Shumacher, Juan Pablo Montoya CART - Christiano De Matta, Paul Tracy NASCAR - Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin IRL - Gil De Ferran/Helio Castroneves, Sam Hornish, Jr. Sprints - Steve Kinser, Danny Lasoski Le Mans - Tom Kristensen, Ron Fellows Rallying - Tommi Makinen, Colin McRae Tracks: Daytona Indianapolis (Oval) Monaco Le Mans Cars: Porsche 911 This would definatly improve IROC alot. In my mind atleast. Last edited by Sea Green; 1 Aug 2002 at 21:57. |

If we're only doing 4 tracks? Gotta be Indianapolis, Nurburgring Nordschliefe & GP course combined, Suzuka or Bathhurst, and Jacarapagua (Rio).

Now that I think about it, it would need more than 4 tracks to show who is the best. But Lee, you must admit, you'll have to have Daytona there too, for the NASCAR guys.
