Great news. While I appreciated Motors TV's live coverage of the Kyalami race, they don't really have the resources (or picture quality) to do it justice. I hope Sky have Murray Walker commentating, but failing that I suppose they'll have Watson/Edwards? Hope Murray's commentary isn't limited to a half-arsed effort from the BBC like last time.

Indeed, great news. Sky Sport's always give fantastic coverage to any series they cover, I guess Sky's sucess with the A1 and the IRL championships being on Sky has made the channel more motorsport friendly.

Sky are def. making a play for motorsport and motors in general. New 'Vroom vroom' series on Sky One, A1 GP, GP Masters, IRL, etc.. I don't expect this to be the last racing series they try to get ...

Yes, Sky's committment to getting motorsport on the telly is to be applauded.
And it's a far better home for it than the terrestrial channels who don't generally have the time to devote to doing it properly. It has to be LIVE, and it will be. |

Murray is doing the commentary for the series that airs to all the TV stations that buy it I think, well the English speaking ones I guess, so I heard on the website.
It is no doubt very good news, I can't wait for this race, it's going to be awesome and I can't wait when I go to Silverstone and actually see Mansell race which I never thought I'd do!!!! |

I was there and the temperature was a scorching 46 degrees C just after the lunch break. It was a shame we had two safety car periods which shortened the race but nice to see Nigel win his second race.
Three of us bumped into Nigel on Tuesday as he was walking the track with sons Greg and Leo, what a nice guy, he took the time to chat to each of us and thanked us for our efforts in marshalling. |

Murray's commentary was very poor, he retired at the right time and should remain so.

I did wonder if his feed was a bit dodgy, he can only commentate on what he gets fed, so if the feed and info isn't up to F1 standards, and I guess it probably wasn't, maybe it wasn't all his fault. |

Only thing that annoys me about Murray these days is his chronic coughing!
Other than that, he's still great to listen to. If you want an example of bad commentary, I urge you to watch the WTCC from Magny Cours. |

Don't get me wrong Knowlesy, I'd rather listen to Murray coughing for an hour than 10 minutes of James Allen!

As for the information supply... everyone seems to imagine that commentators have banks of monitors to watch so that we see everything but just don't bother to mention it... In fact, it's extremely rare to have more than the same picture sent to viewers.. and here's why... How annoying would it be if we were ranting on about something we were watching that you couldn't see?? We talk to the same pictures that you see, so that the commentary makes sense... Usually - but not always - there will be a timing monitor as well, so we CAN let you know what's happening with the leaders while a local director follows some national interest (otherwise known as a tail-ender...) Murray is still my idol. He didn't start his BBC F1 career until he was in his sixties, I believe - I still have time to try and be at least SOME use at my chosen profession |

Just as an aside... is a Priest-catcher like the Child-Catcher character in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang... but a little more selective?
Why not an ecclestiastical-person-catcher? No vergers?? Vicars?? Bishops?? |
