How come according to the member list there are about 2000 registered users who have never, ever posted, some dating back to 1988?

The thing I can't figure out is why so many people would register then not post anything. Why bother?

My guess is that most of them have moved on now, leaving the rest of us here by ourselves... . . . . . . (sigh)

Some of us simply do not have much to say, but still like knowing that there is a community to go to when they must let their opinion be known.

Nice piece of e-chaeology though!

Although I sort of doubt the veracity of people being registered since 1988.

There was barely even an internet then - I think it was still called Arpanet and windows was only just emerging from under its rock!

Ooh did I invent a new term - didn't come up when I googled it.

e-chaeology - the science of digging up old stuff on the internet for entertainment

I wonder if the term will take off - remember, you saw it here first!

NPP should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Why don't I post? Well, most of the time, I have nothing to say that hasn't already been said, and when I have, I am confident that someone else will soon turn up and say it in a much better way. Furthermore, getting my thoughts across in a manner compatible with the rather high standards of this forum (ie, not simply correct English, but English that is at the same time colloquial, humorous and sophisticated) is hard work for the non-native speaker.

That's why I don't post, but visit very often just to read and learn, about motorsports and about English as well. Thus, I am an often invisible, but not a totally inactive member of this place and would greatly miss it if it weren't there.

Best wishes

NPP

It's hard enough for the native speaker...

Given your correct use of the subjunctive, I consider you have nothing to fear!

Yes NPP thats a very good post and your english is fine...much better than mine i'd have said, and i'm a native speaker! Get stuck in with the posting, people are very understanding if you don't get things quite right.

I post rather to much really...but then if you took all the press release threads away I wouldn't have nearly as many.

Better to remain silent and be thought an idiot than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I read alot on here and did so before i joined up although now I have started Marshalling I may have more to say.

So many native speakers get that one wrong...even Clare Grogan on the greatest number 1 hit ever ("Happy Birthday") sings

If they were me
And I was you
Would you've liked a present too?

instead of the more correct "if I were you".

Not quite perfect (but with whom can a (justified) claim of perfection lie? Certainly not myself, I am certain. Let he who is without sin, and all that ), but undoubtedly far better than many!

I second the others' motion, NPP: if your concerns are purely based around the standard of your English, then, IMO, you have nothing to fear.

Don't feel compelled to post, of course, unless you wish to, but we would all, I am sure, love to see your thoughts (should you want to, but have let concerns over English stop you).

Regarding the thread, thus the topic, as a whole, well, I have browsed the user list a few times and pondered about it.

I just hope that most of the no/limited-post posters are indeed lurkers: it would be sad to think if there were squillions of dead usernames doing nothing but using up space (I presume there are a fair few like this, but here is hoping it is not overly many).

No need to post provided you're clicking on the ads...........

Just kidding!

Seriously, I would hope that in most forums, provided you're making an effort, no-one is going to worry too much if the English is a little rough and ready.

I know we do have a couple of pedants around, but to be honest, they tend to pick on people who have English as their first language!

Post as much or as little as you want NPP - but don't feel that yo ucan't post because your English may not be up to spec - looks fine to me in any case!
