So simple it's brilliant!
Hey guys, remember after Silverstone, Sam Michael, Williams Chief Engineer spoke of a secret tactic? (he had a thread all about it...... http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...5&pagenumber=1 and Mr Kitson, you were way off the mark ) Well, in this months F1Racing Peter Windsor explained how it worked, and as the title of the thread says, it's so simple it's brilliant.
What the Williams pit crew did was.......... Have both sets of tyres in the pit box at the same time, and the guys just worked round them. Chief Mechanis Carl Gaden shouted "Ralf" over the radio to avoid confusion and a disqualification for using the wrong tyres on the wrong car. Whilst Rafe was having his tyres fitted Rubens was at the exact same time, but once both Rafe and Rubens exited their pit boxes, the tyres were in place already for Juan Pablo's stop at the same time as the Ferrari mechanics were running back into the garage to get Michaels tyres!!! Brilliant ay, and i can't believe that no-one has thought of this before!! Last edited by Mr V; 18 Aug 2003 at 05:36. |

Good one, but, like you say, it seems like a bit of a no brainer now you mention it.

I thought the secret was that they knew they could block the ferrari drivers if they lined up for their pit boxes....LOL
I wouldn't have thought that they would be allowed to have so many tyres in the box,but can easily see the few seconds saved |

How does that work if refuelling is involved?
The refuelling rig is either refilled of their is a different one for each driver - so do they just hold the other nozzle ready while the first car is being done and then reach over? |

They must have a stand-in refueler...it'd be stupid not to - get the other guys to get second driver's fuel rig ready...
I don't understand why they wouldn't have the second set of tyres there anyway... |

Excellent. It was always said by the team and others that it didn't involve getting in the way of other teams.
Just eliminates one step. How did it take so long for teams to do this? I suppose pace car situations are few and far between and there are probably more exciting things to talk about after the race. |

Refueling - I'll try to check this but I suspect the refueller simply has both next to each other and picks up the needs hose then that is put to side as next one is used. Only need one guy to hold at back so use to two there the major important and skill is the guy putting the fuel nozzel on. He will have jsut to step left/right to get to the correct hose.
