The Motorsport Photographs of Nick Loudon

Nick Loudon is a good friend. One of the best racing snappers from the 1960s who should really have a book out showing his work. This was to happen, but he lost all faith with the motor racing world when some of his best images were stolen and used in a book without his permission. A very angry Nick gave up on the idea.

He has however some re-kindled interest and has kindly allowed me to post some of his images here. I think you'll agree they are stunning. There must be a publisher out there somewhere.

Nick is a one-off, a total nutcase! He now works in a zoo, as a keeper of big cats. He even has a pet lion, he slept with the animal for 8 months to nurse it through illness and thankfully for Nick, the lion now knows him very well!

Here is some of Nick's absolutely stunning work. Please respect his copyright.

Jimmy in the H16 at Oulton, Gold Cup 1966:

Chris Amon in the 1968 Gold Cup. This was Enzo's favourite photograph. A copy still hangs in Maranello today.

Jimmy Clark at Crystal Palace in 1965 in the Ron Harris F2 Lotus 35.

Jack Sears in the fearsome Lotus 30, Silverstone '65.

Jim Clark in similar pose at Goodwood.

Snetterton - 'Archie Scott Brown Trophy' start in 1964. Salvadori on pole, G.Hill in the Maranello Ferrari, who is in the Lotus 23?

Peter Arundell, F2 Lotus 35 at Mallory in '65.

Peco trophy start at Brands in 1961. Moss, Parkes, Hill & Sears.

Salmon & Salvadori at Brands, 1961?

Jackie Stewart in the Chequered Flag Elan 26R leads the Ian Walker Racing 'Goldbug' version driven by Peter Arundell at Mallory in 1964.

Graham Hill at Goodwood in 1964.

John Surtees (a good friend of Nick's) waves Pedro Rodriguez past. Silverstone 1965. A rare outing for Pedro in a Lotus.

Unknown..any ideas? Who, where, when??

...and we thought motor racing was dangerous. Nick with his lion, Turkana. Taken in 1997.

Even more breathtaking stuff here, Andrew. Many, many, thanks for sharing those...

I have invited a guy to join ten tenths, from Flickr. Specifically for his pictures from Daytona and Sebring in the early 70s... Search for Nigel Smuckatelli, on www.flickr.com, and persuade him to add some here?

Fascinating stuff! Even my wife would be interested in Nick's current passion for big cats.

Very poignant story regarding Jim Clark.

Yes, I agree, particularly if they are accompanied by his articulate anecdotes.

Chris Amon in the 1968 Gold Cup.

Nick is not on the net and therefore posted to me these notes on this fabulous Amon picture, which I have scanned:

It is not just action shots, Nick is particularly fond of this one and the fascinating story behind it:

Innes Ireland at the same event in the colonel's 250GTO.

Don't try this at home. Nick took this photo of his former colleague Giles with Turkana. The animal was not sedated!

wow, some fantastic images there, both cats and cars. Can't believe how close he has got to both.

Very impressed, a real talent.
