Diesel engine
Hello, everyone. I've heard that a diesel engine has been used in Formula 1 sometime ago, not now, obviously. Does somebody know who used this unusual kind of engine and when?
Thank you. |

A Diesel has never raced in F1. However a series of Cummins Diesels raced at Indianapolis in the early 50s and in 1952 Freddie Agabashian put one on pole with a lap of 139.10MPH.
The car was too heavy and this tended to cause tyre wear problems. On the other hand the car had the potential to go the whole 500 miles on just 50 gallons of fuel. The chassis was set up for the race to minimise tyre wear so that it ran more slowly than in qualifying. Unfortunately the turbocharger intake was too low so that it sucked up all sorts of rubbish and became clogged causing the car to retire. |
