QLD 500 - Penalties Issued
CAMS STATEMENT
Penalties imposed at the Shell Championship Series Round Nine Queensland 500 Ipswich, August 24 - 26, 2001 Inquiry held over from previous Round - re: Oran Park Pit Lane Incident A long inquiry was held into the incident from the previous Round at Oran Park, whereby the CAT Racing Team's pit equipment became entangled with Greg Murphy's car as he exited the pit bay during a practice session. After hearing evidence from a number of different sources including Greg Murphy, members of the CAT Racing Team and also the Castrol Team, it was found that Greg Murphy had indeed exited the pit bay without reasonable care, whilst having knowledge that the CAT Racing Team were moving around in their pit bay. The Stewards also gave weight to the fact that the incident had occurred in a warm up session, not a race, and therefore there was less time pressure on him to exit the pits quickly. The Stewards also took into consideration that even though all teams and drivers were aware of the slippery nature of the pit bays, Greg Murphy still had the car positioned further forward than usual. Greg Murphy was therefore fined $5,000. Greg Murphy has lodged an appeal against the decision made by the stewards, which will be heard Thursday 30 August at the CAMS National Office. Sunday August 26 An inquiry was held into the allegation that K & J Thermal Products Racing (Car #43) had used 'race tape' in the wheel gun to retain the wheel nut. The team was found to have breached the regulations, which state that the nut "is not permitted to be retained in the wheel gun", and was subsequently fined $1,000. The following drivers were given stop/go penalties during the Queensland 500: * Mark Larkham/Wayne Gardner (Car #10) for a Driving Infringement * David Besnard/Matthew White (Car # 9) for a Pit Stop Infringement * Rod Nash/Tony Ricciardello (Car # 54) for Pit Lane Speeding |

Shame they don't issue penalties for stupidity, like people just walking in front of cars, and not getting out the way... I'm not sure if some of the guys were just brave, or stupid. It's a bit of an eye opener.

I'm impresssed with how well behaved all drivers were. There was only one charge on a support catorgory as well, just so happens he got himself charged twice, but it made my weekend a little easier.

That was Brett.
And to think I've been chastised by pit lane officials for walking in front of the tents in Canberra in pit lane during the morning warm up. (yes I did have the right pass to be there) |

Makeup - they reckon we glow too much under the lights (Although I reckon that is really the radioactive feedback we give out ...)

Hehe, we had the last of the crownies from the tower. Pretty silly of me to be drinking it whilst trying to commentate and write a race report, just to show you how far out of it I was, i went to drink the mic a few time

I can tell you that LP is lucky with their pit strategy, as they stopped on the last available lap...had their pit stall been on the other side of the control line, there would have been some serious trouble...

Not really - I can tell you that AVESCO have re-written the definition of a pit lane control line to suit themselves - they have moved it from in line with the start/finish line to pit exit! This applies at all circuits - their reasoning? they only want to count laps if a car successfully makes a pit stop!
