Clipsal 500 ratings??
I saw an article about the television ratings for the Clipsal 500 which were very impressive but they spent a lot of time comparing the ratings to last years event but wasnt Clipsal up against the Commonwealth Games last year??
Was this year the highest rating since Clipsal began?? |

Isn't it funny how they defended the 2006 ratings and blamed the Commonwealth Games last year but don't even mention them this year.
The ratings were great this year but the fact they operate like this is why they have no credibility. |

Interesting quetion. Our coverage was worse than in the past, as we got both races shown back-to-back on Sunday afternoon, with little other coverage (well, we got the preview show). Normally we get them shown 'as live' so I'd expect to get race one on Saturday afternoon. This led to me reading the details, and controversy, on here, without any oportunity to see the coverage until well after the event. I'm hoping this isn't the way it will go for the rest of the season.

I just checked and it seems the Sunday (which is always the highest rating day) this year was only the third highest rating at Clipsal.

What was the announced crowd. I hear a record but then every event has had a record since 1997.
I remember reading an article after the 2006 event that the promoter believed he had maxed out all vantage points and only a move to the GP circuit would open up new spectating areas. |

Sunday was up about 3000, and I think corporate sales were up about 1700 this year, which covered alot of the gains across the four days. If the track gets realigned it may change the number of grand stands that they put in, but certainly won't improve any vantage points for GA. Another way to increase crowd numbers is to count the people that can in for the concerts. The crowd figures are generally announced around 3pm, and with Silverchair in 2006 there were a lot of people that just rocked up and bought tickets at the gate. To increase corporate sales and GA sales the only way is to go to the full track, but there will be severe opposition to that due to the increase in traffic chaos. |

TV Ratings were 540K on Saturday (up 34%) and 710K on Sunday (up 46%) in the 5 Metro markets. And it had more viewers than the Cool Aid special that 10 showed in Prime Time.

Why keep comparing it to last years figures? Use a year when the Commonwealth games were not on. Googling the numbers it seems that 2002 was a much larger television audience than this year..
Mabs - I thought Bahrain was live last year?? It's not prime time anyway is it?? I thought it was on at 10.30pm or similar?? Which I think it is again this year?? |

also, a v8 round would get slaughtered in prime time. That cool aid thing bombed but it was a new show so hard to predict but 7 know what v8s would rate in prime time and it would be very low which is no good to anyone.
A regular round only has something like 400,000 viewers - a regular afl game on a saturday or sunday afternoon has something like 800,000 and they are on 8 times a week! |

Interesting report about ratings in yesterdays Sydney Morning Herald. Philip Derriman gave the V8 series some rare space in the Peter McKay dominated paper.

I think the ratings were good this year but comparing it to last year is bit of a farce as the Commonwealth Games were on - all sports including V8s acknowledged the impact they had last year so turn around this year and compare the numbers without mentioning the Commonwealth Games is misleading which is nothing new for avesco. The very first Clipsal 500 and also 2002 had more viewers than this year.
Having said all that though i think the ratings were good and a great start for the year. |
