Shift Lights

I am currently assisting with the construction of a Davrian and have been asked to build a shift light for the vehicle. I have been asked to build a system with at least a 3 stage warning system (3 LED's)with a variable limit.

If anyone could assist me or piont me in the right direction, I would be very greatful.

DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH MONEY YOU HAVE YOU WILL PROBIBLY BE BETTER OFF CALLING DEMON TWEEKS ETC, FOR AN OFF THE SHELF SYSTEM I USE A SHIFT LIGHT AND REV LIMITER COMBINED AND THIS WORKS WELL BUT IT ONLY HAS ONE LIGHT AT THE PRESET SHIFT REVS

I agree with kpm, go to DT.
I use an ARMTech unit built into my Rev Counter
But Armtech and OMEX external units are relatively cheap and effective.

I know that this thread is a little old, does anyone actually have an answer to p38420. I too would like to go about designing a similar shift light. All url's and help appreciated.

To be honest it isn't very technically challenging to design this kind of thing if you have experience however you need reasonable analogue design skills to design a suitable input circuit (to provide clean signals to the MCU) and some knowledge of firmware.

Obviously I cannot go and divulge the inner workings of a commercial product but I would say go for simplicity. Definately use a microcontroller (analogue designs are useless really - no accuracy). You will need to have some binary mathmatics subroutines such as division of 32 bit numbers which is the only difficult part.

You will also need to add some hysterisis to stop the flickering and some filtering of the input. This should be done in the software.
