Dario to test at Infineon tommorow
The Indy Racing League will conduct a private compatibility test at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., on Nov. 11.
The purpose of the test is to determine if any changes are needed for IRL cars to race at the facility. The first IRL event at Infineon Raceway will be held on an IRL-modified 10-turn, 1.77-mile course on Aug. 28, 2005, but the League will conduct an Open Test for all teams in April. It's good that they have Dario doing the testing, since he wasn't to confident that these cars would do well in road racing.
However he was pleasantly surprised at how good the cars felt, and handled, and how well they held up in the tests at Homestead. |

It's a good course. NASCAR runs on it. Major elevation changes and very technical. Probably about 2.5 miles, but the configuration can be changed to suit the individual event. Sonoma, CA is up in the San Francisco Bay area.

Keep 9n mind that the actual circuit that the IRL will run is a new configuration that has not been raced by any other series...
They are using the NASCAR sections at the upper end of the course diagram that does not incorporate the section that makes the trakc look like a "Y" shape, plus they will not run through as many of ethe Esses, and they will use the motorcycle course hairpin at the bottom of the track instead of the one used by ALMS and NASCAR....that portionof the track will serve as an entrance to the pit lanes... I'm not at all confident that this is the best configuration for the IRL to race, but I'm glad that they are racing at Infineon, which is a superb facility... |

I have to agree that they probably haven't picked the best layout to race on. Then again, that's easy to say when we haven't actually seen an IndyCar race there yet.

That's what I usually call it, but since there were some who are not familair with the place, I did not want to confuse them with references to Sears Point....
So that we can make this clear to all readers: Infineon Raceway = Sears Point and also = Sonoma I've seen the track referred to in all three ways....so regardless of the name, we're all referring to the same place... |

I've always known it as Sears Point, but then I never refer to Laguna Seca as 'Mazda Raceway' either.

UPDATE:
The IRL Site now says that they have made a change to the "original" configuration they had planned to run, and the "new" circuit the IRL will race on will include "the Carousel" portion of the track (the area I described as making the top portion of a "Y" when you look at a track map), but the "modified" turns 9 and 11 will remain as part of the circuit... If I understand this correctly, the race circuit that the IRL will run on will be fairly similar to what the AMA races on at Sears Point, but I believe that the "9A" kink in the AMA track will not be part of the configuration... At least that is my understanding of it... I'll keep you posted if I find out differently.... |

The course will be a 12-turn 2.2 mile track now instead of a 1-turn 1.77 mile circuit...
They might just be running the AMA track straight up....because that is the same turn count and distance of the AMA track.... I'm just glad they put the Carousel in and got rid of the NASCAR "Chute"...the carousel section provides for some nice elevation changes and is a fairly quick portion of the circuit...relatively speaking, anyway... |

Couldn't agree more. I always hated that they removed the Carousel for the stock-car races.

Did the change come about because of Dario's testing?

Commerically, although it is the same company, IndyCar is on Firestone tyres and ChampCar is on Bridgestone.
It wouldn't be "acceptable" to have the wrong ones on. And I'm not sure the wheels are compatible anyway. |

Would they allow IRL races on non-ovals in wet conditions?
