Went to autocross school last week...
One evening in the classroom, and one at the local track. I took the SVT Focus and had a blast, especially when it started raining. The Focus understeers at the limit. I tried to induce oversteer ,but didn't have much luck. There were about 60 cars at the school. One of the instructors brought a Porsche Cayenne SUV for "demo's" . The first event is in 2 weeks. I think I'll be buying new tires often !!

One thing that irritates me about autocross is trat its got another disciplines name - Autocross is in fact rallycross without tarmac. the sport you call autocross is in fact called SOLO 2. rant over!

Curious, what did you try to induce oversteer?

On a trip to Houston the Houston SCCA had an Autocross/Solo event and took me along. It was great and you could ride shotgun in 911s RX7s and even a 'vette. I told them that I was an autocross champion but that we did it on the dirt. We would call Solo sprinting.

Oh and another thing... autocross is not rallycross because it is a timed event rather than a race event. You can run on your own on an autocross event because it is the time that counts. This avoids ARDs courses and medicals.

Snow wheeee! That is even more fun and sorts the men from the boys. Ask the Finns and Swedes. You need one of these.

AWD? Bah!
Try driving through half a foot of snow, with ice underneath it, in one of these, with two skinny bias-ply tires driving and 400lb-ft available at idle! On second thought, don't... No sense in exposing an old car to salt. And the Japanese think they invented recreational drifting! Last edited by Lee Janotta; 2 May 2003 at 15:56. |

Just learning control Lee. Reverse flicks and handbrake turns aren't for use on the track (normally).
As for 2WD snow driving I have done that too. Twice caught in bad blizzards in my Alpina. The wide tyres on the back were much worse than your skinnies would have been. Did have an LSD though. |
