Torsion Bar suspension.
I know that the Bentley Speed 8 and Audi R10 use torsion bar springs in their suspension. What advantages are there to this, other than lightness and the like. Any advantages to handling/adustability?

Possibly easier to package, and also could be arranged to transfer the loads into a more advantageous location (eg back to one of the main bulkheads in the chassis.

They also do not bend the damper due to load eccentricity like a typical coil spring over damper setup does. This reduces friction in the system and makes simulation easier and more predictable.

While the examples are Sportscars, I think this technical question is better served in the Racing Technology forum.

F1 cars also virtually exclusively use torsion bars, again for the packaging and friction benefits already mentioned.
Once you are at the sportscar / F1 end of the mark, cost and availability of parts is not a problem. The torsion bars will be bespoke items designed for each application. |
