After the tragic death of Michele Alboreto on Wednesday, Audi will need to find a replacement driver to drive it his place, what are the chances of them signing Alan McNish to race in his place.

Alan stated during an impromptu interview in the Audi garage during the Donnington race that he would be at Le Mans as a spectator only. I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota have him on an exclusive contract.

It is very likely to be one of last years other drivers. cappello , pirro , Biela , Kristensson and Aiello will be confirmed soon I expect. The other driver would need to be experienced so not the 2 new DTM drivers. Possibly Nissen or another Audi driver I'd say. The question is who would like to see? I would like to see M.Schumacher to see if he is as good in a sports car as he is in an F1 car!

From last year's AUDI lineup, there's McNish(already said was not running le mans), Stéphane Ortelli, and Christian Abt. Either of them have other rides which would conlfict?
OT: but I thought McNish said somehwere he has to run so many race to keep an FIA license. He ran daytona 24hrs, anyone else know what else he is up to? Last edited by Heeltoe6; 30 Apr 2001 at 01:55. |

After a thorough investigation, Audi and DEKRA (the Independant German road safety organisation) have announced that a slow puncture was the cause of the unfortunate accident that took the life of Michele Alboreto last week at the Lausitzring, and have (thankfully) decided to go ahead with this weekends pre-practice at Le Mans.
Still no announcement on the driver though. |

Ortelli has been confirmed as a Bentley driver this year so it won't be him Heeltoe6. He will share his car with Brundle and Kelleners.

There is no chance of Abt driving the car as there is a DTM race that weekend. My money is still on either McNish or Letho.

I bet Mario's avaiable.
P.S. I don't believe that "slow puncture" story for a New York Minute. Wouldn't that have set up a warning vibration well before it caused a huge accident like that? A sudden blowout I can accept, but not a slow leak. Could a technically minded person enlighten me please? |

with the rivalry between Audi and BMW last year I find it unlikely to think that BMW would let one of their drivers drive for Audi or any other teams for that fact.

did anyone see the picture of michele's car in the autosport!! - my god what a mess and was it me or did i notice that there was no roll-bar present suggesting more than just a tyre blow-out that actually killed him!!

If you read the accompanying article, the gist was tyre blowout at over 200mph, loss of control leading to car becoming airborn, car flips, clears barrier and lands upsidedown, roll hoop digs in to grass, Michele has no chance.
I've seen a similar accident before and I'm not sure that anything can be done to reduce this risk with open cars. The forces are just too great. |
