ChampCar not on Ford's radar screen?
Is Ford contracted to badge the engines for 2005? I think they are, but I'm not sure.
This was a post that I made in the "Silly Season" thread, but it would seem that nobody knows the answers to a very basic and important question. And so I've taken the liberty of starting this new thread, and moving related posts from the other one.

Macdaddy, that story is an interview with Dan Davis in which he mentions all the different racing programs Ford is supporting BUT OWRS. To my knowledge, Ford is not signed with OWRS for '05. Last I heard was a quote from KK last month saying that they have a good relationship with Ford and expected Ford to renew but I've seen no announcement.

There's a difference in that relationship with Ford selling Cosworth and Pi Research to KK and GF. Last year, Ford was pretty much getting its money back from the sponsorship through Cosworth's at-track support and rebuild contract. That situation has changed.

Indycool...
Ford can still revamp some of its investment in badging, via the advertising from the series name/logo. I don't think that a badging contract should be too terribly expensive? I've quickly searched the news archives on the CC website for any mention of "Ford" and "badge" - but found nothing relating to this question. Hopefully we'll find out soon. I've also fired off an email to CC, asking the same question, but they don't seem to be as adept at answering queries as they used to be.

Heck... CC may even give Ford a "sweet deal" - it would save all of the expenses associated with changing the logo!

Hopefully we will, macdaddy. As I recall the CART SEC filings, the presenting sponsorships for Bridgestone and Ford were about $2 million apiece and that included additional TV advertising. Would imagine the '04 deal was close to the same.

Some more searching reveals that the contract with Ford was for two years, and signed in November 2002. And, therefore, has expired.

I believe Bridgestone HAS announced it's continuing as a presenting sponsor.

I believe you're correct regarding Bridgestone, indycool.
But the only info I could dig up was this, dated April 2004:
Quote:
“We are delighted to formalize the extension of its partnership with Champ Car for the 2004 season,” said Al Speyer.

Macdaddy, I can't find it either yet. The last news item on the Bridgestone Racing site was on Nov. 30 that it had been named official tire and associate sponsor at St. Pete.

You would think $2m would be pennies to badge an engine. Ford doesn't have to develop or build the engines.

It would be pennies, but as I said, the relationship is different now. The Bridgestone deal didn't include tire "deals" for the teams. If it was part of the Cosworth or Pi Research deals, I'd think a sponsorship would have been announced at the same time.

There was a story from England in a paper called The Telegraph that, to avoid F1 penalties and legal actions and the like, Ford put Cosworth into "administration" (which I take it is similar to bankruptcy) to avoid that a couple days before selling to KK and GF. I'll try to find a link. It's clear, with the canning of Jackie Stewart, that Ford is cutting way back on this type of racing.

Recall from some of the articles posted here that they've suggested heavily that not only would Ford renew their committment to CC, but they'd increase it substantially. I believe that was suggested in SpeedTV articles, which I'd consider pretty credible.

After Ford was such a "great help" to the series in the whole Jourdain situation, they darn well better ante up for 2005!
