Benetton looking good!!
Looks like the Renault with the new Areodynamic package was quite effective. Maybe Fishi is not doing a good move leaving to go to Jordan. He maybe should of waited another year. Button didnt do to good with it but hey thats Button, rookie mistake at the bus stop.
Trulli must be sick and tired of all the DNF's but he has a light at the end of the tunnel and its called Renault Benetton...lol |

The big problem with BAR is the Reynard Chassis.
If they dont change it , they will never win. |

Not just the aerodynamics of the Renault is surprising... Look at the list...
1)Renault's reliability - Running a full race at Hockenheim, and then at Spa, where engines are often peaked, shows not only engine reliability, but also the whole package... 2)Renault's electronics - THE MOST IMPRESSIVE. Fisi and Button both made terrific starts at both attempts to leap frog the Mclarens and Ferraris to gain a couple of places. They seem to have a traction advantage over the Ferrari of Rubens and the chasing DC which is clearly evident out of Bus stop and the hairpin... 3)Renault's speed - Its not easy keeping your car 2 car lengths in front of Ferraris and Mclarens down the fast and uphill straight for 80% of the race... 4)Renault's chassis - It is extremely easy on tires, isnt it? Running the whole race without changing of tires...yet maintaining a consistent race pace that keeps him comfortably in 3rd... And Fisi seems neater around the corners than DC... maybe its the michelins? But Ralf is on the same tyres...yet...struggling as it wears... 6)Renault's pitstop - Outfoxed Rubens and DC twice...managing to get their cars around in-pit-out in front... 5)Fisichella's worth - I knew Fisi was one of the more exciting young guns with potential... much like Trulli... and he proved it. Excellent driving (clean, controled aggressiveness, and great racecraft) to hold back DC and Rubens... he's really worth a shot in a top team...perhaps DC should get his bum out of the way for Fisi? BUT i think Renault made one wrong move...to let Fisi go. Trulli was a good catch...but Fisi is too... *sigh* |

If what we saw today is the first crow of the french rooster, as it were, we could be for a whole new environment for the 2002 season. Ferrari, Mercedes MacLaren and BMW Williams better pay heed. Jarno has what it takes if given a top package.

Yep , we will have to watch out for Benetton, they did finsh 4th and 5th in Germany also. We knew the start of the season would be painful but they really did their homework unlike BAR who seem to be happy to just get by.

It's obvious that Renault will make it to the top. But let's wait for the next races to see more development...

Great performance (NOT Button!!)
BUT... I am suprised that there is no appeal against those "slicks"? Does anyone have pics of the tyres at the end? It looked like the fronts had the same groove intact. (I.e. have they deepened one groove deliberately)? Last edited by Kenny W.; 2 Sep 2001 at 17:30. |

It's great to see the Renault (which was supposed to be an absolute dog), performing so well at engine circuits (Spa and Hockenheim). Interesting.

If it wasn't for Honda, Jordan and BAR would probably fighting for 4th and 5th...
BAR also has a problem with "not being able to use its Bridgestones as effectively as Jordan" which could explain the early season Michelin rumours. But the problems are worse... I also have a bad feeling that Renault will be laughing at everyone else in the future (hopefully distant) |

Benetton (sorry, Renault!! ) have improved vastly in the past few races, mostly thanks to some great driving from Fisi, who has driven his socks off all year for little reward. Until Sunday that is......
Perhaps leaving the team wasn't the best move, and Trulli may now get himself into a race-winning seat (which he deserves). And Fisichella may again have moved at the wrong time yet again (he left Jordan just before the teams glory years '98-99!) But hopefully Jordan get their act together next year. Also.... Why on earth have they kept Button???? I can see why Renault wouldn't want two Italians, but surely there is someone who could do a better job!! |

I don`t buy that as soon as Honda get serious, anyteam with Honda backing will win WDC. I see a Ferrari domination for 02,03...they have personnel, budget, tyres, engine and M Schumacher, try beating that without the best car. And who is going to produce the best car Maclaren,Williams...both have shocking reliability problems and drivers of doubtful ability. |

The thing thats struck me about Benelton all weekend was their traction and grip levels - Fisi used the same set of fronts all the way thru and only changed the rears once. Looks to me as if the team have got their traction control software up and running to the same level it was back in 94-95, ie better than everone elses.

The Bridgestone teams set up their cars with a lot of negative camber, while the Michelins seem to do best when set up relatively perpendicular to the road surface. That set up should wear the grooves more evenly across the tread, but Fisi's tires looked very odd -- one groove still apparent but otherwise slick. Any explanations? In any event, Benetton/Renault/Fisi looked great yesterday. Congrats to them. |

Also on Fishi's last pit stop you seen very well that the front tires were quite worn down and they didnt change them! So I guess they knew the tires would hold, he was sliding abit at the end but still crossed the finish line.
Well atleast it gives us this tire war we didnt have last year!.. |
