New Lola Prototype
I dont know if this is old news to some but here is an announcement from Lola regarding their new LMP2.
I note the comment that it is expected to be the first of several new prototypes leading to a 'full scale sportscar revival' following the launch of LMES Here |

Too bad the car isn't a roofed one...
A nice spyder, though... and another chassis's choice to campaign in LMP2. |

I like, I like, I like, I like, I like.......
I'm bias to Lola's, especially the small proto's and champ cars. I wish there was a Lola branch in the US. Oh well, bring it on!!! Does anyone know the price range, I rather buy a Lola than a house if the price is right ? |

Its also very interesting to see that Lola will provide an update kit for the current MG Lola LMP675, including a new tub.
As this car can race as an LMP1 as well this must be great news for Dyson, RML, Chamberlain etc. The Lola LMP1/2 may at last fullfill the potential that the original Lola B98 LMP900 and Lola MG have shown over the years. |

The CrashNet story was confusing, based on the post from Noise Boy 2..
I've always understood this new car to have the kits for the B2K/40 as well, but the CrashNet piece on the link above definitely refers to kits for the "LMP 675 models", which could easily be read as in "plural" types of 675 class chassis...which would include the cars Dyson has, etc. I don't think that was the intent of the statement in the story, but I'd be interested in knowing for sure.... |

Although I have always liked small displacement prototypes, in today's word, they are pretty much pointless. Why would anyone spend a ton of money on a new car even if they could dominate?
LMP2 is a class few care about, and which has no chance for an overall win. At least with the old LM675 class, the car had a remote chance for an overall victory. If this new Lola is really a replacement for the Lola/MG and intended to be small displacement option for the LMP1 class, it might have some success....at least until VAG or some other company with huge pockets builds a new car for LMP1. |

Picking this to pieces, i see MG-lola, Lola B2K/40, Snobeck, and Audi.
It's not really completely new, just a rehash of Lola's old ideas to fit the 05 regs. I hope it's quite cheap and also reasonably quick, more privateers.... |

Autosport today say the update is specifically for the 'MG-engined Lola LMP675 contender', now known as the Lola-MG B01/60. The new car is known as the Bo5/40.
Teams not wanting to upgrade will be able to buy a bodykit for the current LMP675 Lola-MG to run as a hybrid. Presumably this bodywork mod would be to convert the MG into an LMP2 hybrid, as the car is not homologated as an LMP900 like the Zytek (DBA). Unless of course the MG-Lola can run as a hybrid LMP1 car, while still retaining its LMP675 weight. The ACO regs do allow for some leway when building a hybrid. BTW, if the MG-Lola can be cinverted into a hybrid, with only bodywork changes, this suggests converting a car to hybrid spec will not be as difficult as expected. |

The new lola does not need to run the MG engine in LMP1 or 2 spec. Its just an option for those running that car at the moment.

People race for many reasons. I was speaking of spending the money on an LMP2 basically in regard to a return on investment, or in the commercial sense. For the cost of running a LMP2 team, one could get a lot more exposure elsewhere.
GTS and GT cars are racing versions of commercially available cars, so a win in either class has some benifit to the car maker. |

I would think you could get close to top in LMP2 with a budget that would run a privateer Porsche GT3, and certainly less then a GTS car. That would mean you would compete for a class win in the same overall race as those classes, and with the right program you could get the same exposure.
Maybe it will draw in manufacturers who have neither a GT type car or the budget for an LMP1, and they will do engine programs. The engine range possible opens the door to a lot of manufacturer's ranges. If the series and Le Mans get the right kind of promotion then it is benificial for all. I have always been attracted to endurance racing partly because of the different classes competing. It becomes a fascinating study over the time of the race. |

Why do teams compete in F3,F3000.
LMP2 will appeal to enthusiasts who want to race in prototypes, but cannot afford LMP1. To me LMP2 is a junior class for smaller manufactuers establishing themselves in the sport. Radical for example have announced a V8 engined car for one-make racing. There next step may well be an LMP2 car. |

As long as buying spares isn't a logistics nightmare as the lola/mg is! As known, only the deep pocket privateers teams can afford the darn thang! Last edited by The Treester; 16 Jan 2004 at 14:36. |
