First Car for a Toronto Teen
Hey guys,
I'm a 19 year old kid toying with the idea of buying my very first road car. The few conditions I do have are; it must be a "fun to drive" car (I plan to have the same kind of fun my Dad did 40 years ago learning to drive on the back roads of Niagara-on-the-Lake in a Rover 2000TC and Fiat 124, various Citroens and such), have a manual gearbox, and be able to get me around in winters when the City of Toronto fails to plow side roads. I've looked into E36 BMW 318s and 320s as well as '83-'99 5.0L Mustangs (I have California-blood in me, what do you expect!). My price range is around $1000 or $2000 with a hard cap at $4000. Thoughts? Chris |

Umm... who is paying for your insurance??
For $4000 as a new driver ,you might be able to afford an ancient Cavalier if you are paying the insurance as well. |

My criteria for my first car was 4cyl 5sp rwd sedan with aircon. These days you will struggle to find rwd in a mainstream make (BMW could potentially cost big $$$ if work is needed), but something fairly reasonable could be found - avoid the sporty models though as insurance is normally exorbitant by comparison with a "normal" model which isn't a lot different.

They don't really take that into affect over here. They go by body style, engine capacity, and color.

That's a bonus then. Interesting they worry about colour but not turbos! Dare I ask what the attitude to aftermarket modifications is then, given the difference in rules of what you can do to cars over there compared to what we have?

You don't have to report it to insurance or anything. We all just kinda, do it. Technically it's all illegal, but the cops don't really give a crap, unless your car is obnoxiously loud, then they'll just give you a noise ticket.

Yeah I realise that, and it is similar to an extent here with the police, but do insurance companies refuse to cover these mods if a claim is made? There are a lot of people who think they have cover...
Here I would say it would have to have been something major or contributing to an accident, but ultimately they have the ability not to pay out and with financial pressures increasing I would expect this to happen more often. |
