Renault 21 Turbo support race at Le Mans

I'm not quite sure where to place this thread, so mods, please feel free to move this, if necessary.

I'm looking for any information on the 1990 Le Mans support race in which there was a huge, fiery crash on the start/finish straight. It was a Renault 21 Turbo Europa Cup race.

I can't remember any more details except that I think one of the drivers died in the crash, maybe?

Anyone remember this at all? I was only a kid, but it was the first year they had the chicanes, and the last year they had the old pits (my father and I were sitting over the Nissan pits that year).

Thanks

The driver your refer too was called Wolfgang Schutz I think.

He did not die at the time but some time later as a result of his injuries. The crash was caused by Larrauri being hit from behind as the cars accelerated from the start.

Larrauri hit the wall and there followed a huge pile up and Schutz's car suffered massive damage to one side and was briefly on fire. A couple of other drivers where also hurt including Larruri who started the 24 hour race later so could not have been too bad.

The shortend race was won by Sigala from Gouhier

If you check this link you will find out that Wolfgang Schütz survived the accident, he had been in a coma for a week after the crash. There is even a picture of the crashed car on the page. I remember Schutz as a hard racer who had lots of encounters with Jan Lammers in the Renault Eurocup races they both contested.
Glad to see that he did not die in th crash.

Thanks for putting me right about Schütz, I was convinced he had died some time after the crash, but from his injures!

He had been around a long time before 1990, I have a photo of him from the early 80's when the series was for 5 turbo's. He also ran in the BMW Procar series I think.

I remember this accident, it happened right in front of me. I'm surprised it wasn't caught on film.

Actually Larrauri felt the after effects of the shunt and only drove for +/- 7hrs in the race, with only 1 stint between 0440ish and the retirement of the car in the final throes of there race. Makes the achievements of Brun and Pareja even more remarkable.
