My first race win!!!!

Well it's been a long time coming, but I have finally won a race and I'm pretty bloody happy about it, so I will insist on boring you all senseless with a blow by blow description of the entire marvellous event.

The scene was the 25th annual Queensland Historic Race meeting, held last weekend at Qld Raceway. There were 50 entries for my group, historic touring cars and with a grid capacity of just 36, the organisers wisely decided to split the field into 2 divisions, based on qualifying times. The cuotff was 67 seconds and I qualified with a 1:07.4, so that put me sixth on the grid for division 2, the slower half of the entry. I got a really good start, my best yet, and was 3rd into the first corner, following a pair of Minis, Cooper S, of course. Exiting turn 4, the second placed Mini spun to the infield, fortunately I was a couple of lengths back and was not involved, this put me up to second, wow I thought! Coming down the long main straight for the first time, my 3.3 litre Holden Torana, easily rounded up the 1275cc Mini and I was now leading a race, for the first time in my life!

As we approached the hairpin on the second lap, the Mini took about 70 metres from me under brakes, it's 500kg lighter, and shot straight back into the lead. down the main straight again, I pulled out and drove straight past again, we did this for a couple of laps and it was great fun. The Mini driver is a friend of mine and a very clean, fair racer.

Then, eventually I was able to get away and build a gap, which I did so slowly and very bloody carefully I might add. With a lap to go, I could see a V8 Mustang in my mirrors, headlights blazing. He started fourth on the grid, but accidentally took off in 3rd gear, I did that the day before, and he was storming through the pack, setting fastest lap on the way. I could see him gaining ground, but not enough, as the chequered flag unfurled, I was two seconds clear and a very happy chappie.

Well done David!
I have won 1 real race and shared a win in a relay race and it is a good feeling to win.
Wait till your first pole!

(I don't want to talk about my first pole)

Attached is a pic of the Green Meanie in action...

I must say, if Patto was half as excited as I was, he must have been pretty excited- it was probably the best race for weekend

Well done.

The only tempering thought is that there is a theory that once you've won, your desire to race is lessened as you've proved yourself - the reality is it just gives you a taste of forbidden fruit. You are now, almost unquestionably, sucked in to eternal poverty!

Enjoy.
