Audi R10 set to retire?

Dailysportscar is reporting that the R10 is to retire after this year, announcement of some sort pending in the next 24 hours. Let's hope that there are plans for a successor of some sort... They feel the car is long in the tooth and won't compete well against the Peugeots or Acura in P1 next year.

By retired, I hope they mean "sold to customers".

I highly doubt that. The car just will not remain competitive. They built a car that is inferior to the Peugeot, and I think they've recognized that no amount of testing will change that situation. In order to compete, they need a new car. Selling an uncompetitive in factory hands car, does nothing positive to promote brand image. (Particularly when put in the hands of slower privateers).

I can see one of two results here. Audi either builds a new P1, or focuses efforts elsewhere (GT1.. other type of racing...), as Porsche moves to P1.

Maybe it's me, but I think the wording of the L'Equipe/DSC piece is strongly suggestive of another P1 effort from Audi with a new chassis.

Unless they leave for single-seaters (yeah right) or depart from racing entirely, that is basically 99.9% certain.

My understanding of the LMPEVO is a direct competitor to P-1. Where the factory could put a face on the car and compete in P-1 per se, as what seems now to be optional rather than mandatory.

Me also. A little more road going related in the looks. As IMO LMPEVO would look like. But the R-10/R-15 coupe would work also.

would not be surprised to see a new coupe audi LMP1, but im quite frustrated, the first 'real' competition since the bentley of 2003 and audi now want to call it quits, rather babyish if you ask me, not unless the R10 will have a big update ala lola B07/10-->B08/60.

Where the frack does that come from?! The only thing I have seen quoted from Dr Wolfgang Ullrich is that the car is now three years old and does not have the latitude left in its design to be competitive with the Peugeot Coupe and if they wish to be competitive they need a new design. Where have you seen anything saying they would quit?!

lol I think they're both quite beautiful but the more street-like is very unlikely to become reality, looking at all the recent closed-top prototypes, they all have narrow cockpits...
And bringing in a replacement for the R10 because it's not good enough to compete with the 908 is no shame, it's great news for us sportscar fans! It'll add another couple of years to the Audi Le Mans programme and brings us fans another new car to lust over

You are probably on the right path, but there is the 3:30 threshold that will supposedly be upheld by the ACO with aero adjustments. That being said it may be possible to achieve that with the more road going like concept given the rule-set which is being worked on and that we have not seen yet?
