Motor racing flicks
What's the best and worst racing film around? For my money, it's got to be Grand Prix for those stunning in car camera shots...

Probably worth directing to the Armchair Enthusiast forum.

I agree, Grand Prix was the best IMO.
As for the worst, that one is easy. That Sly Stallone film, 'Driven'. Drivel more like. Terrible, terrible! |

Grand Prix and Le Mans are excellent.
Most other films involving races tend to be based around sabotage or dodgy-dealings. |

The likes of Redline 7000, Fireball 500 and Last American Hero were probably not bad efforts for the time that they were made. Plenty of classic Nascar footage in those.

Le Mans is the motor racing film. Grand Prix is good too - for the period footage - not for the plot or the acting.......

Grand Prix is superb. The racing footage is second-to-none. Le Mans is great simply for the on-track action - McQueen says perhaps 100 words throughout the whole movie.
Driven was a good try by Stallone - his heart was in the right place (you can tell he's an enthusiast) - but it just came out all wrong. |

Sly needed to walk the plank after Driven. That was absolute garbage.
Grand Prix is probably the best overall. Le Mans was good too. A lot of people slagged off Days of Thunder, but I really didn't think it was that bad and probably helped accelerate NASCAR into it's position as more of a national sport than a regional one. |

Well it dumbed it down to build it up I guess. Haven't seen Grand Prix, on the to do list. Le Mans is peerless for the atmosphere of racing. Miminal storyline but that wasn't the point.

Anyone who wants some blessed relief from the current F1 tedium would do well to watch Grand Prix to see the days when there was (ssshhhhh....) overtaking in GP racing........

Why hasn't anyone mentioned The Cannonball Run (and by association The Cannonball Run II). They're hilarious
Er, seriously though, 'sgot to be Grand Prix. The only thing wrong with it (apart from the plot, dialogue, acting etc) is that the German Grand Prix hardly gets a look in. The racing footage makes today's drivers look like spoilt wee boys. Unbelievably unavailable on dvd though (?). |

Extraordinary that really. It was one of the first films I was ever taken to see at the "pictures"...... It was also the first thing I ever taped off the TV when I got a VCR, so my copy of Grand Prix actually dates back to about 1985...... still plays OK as well.... |
