Dates for the 2016 Scottish Classic Sports and Saloons championship have been confirmed. They follow the same format as last year, seven events at Knockhill and one away meeting, at Donington.

3rd April

Harry Simpson made the perfect start to the 2016 season, pole position in qualifying and two race wins. The Ginetta G4R driver coped best with changeable weather conditions, heading the Porsche 911 of Raymond Boyd in both races. Another Porsche 911, driven by last year’s champion, Stan Bernard,
was third in race one and fourth in race two.

Tommy Gilmartin, Morgan +8, tried to keep up with Simpson in race one, but his exuberance led to a race-ending visit to the gravel at Clark corner on lap seven.
Starting at the back of the grid in race two, he managed to climb to third place.

A welcome addition to the championship were two new drivers:
Max Horne – Lotus Cortina and Andrew Graham – Triumph TR7V8.

Several drivers were unable to race due to mechanical problems – hopefully a
larger number will attend the next event on May 1st.

1st May

Ford Escort RS2000 driver Jimmy Crow leads the championship after the meeting on 1st May.Once again, several drivers were unable to attend due to mechanical difficulties, leaving a small field of eleven cars. Conditions ranged from heavy rain in qualifying and race one to bright sunshine in race two.

Tommy Gilmartin, Morgan +8, won race one, followed by Harry Simspon, Ginetta G4R, with Crow in third place. Simpson and Gilmartin swapped places in race two,
Raymond Boyd, Porsche 911 came third.

The crowd were entertained by several battles in both races – including Crow and Alex Montgomery, MGBV8, and that of John Bennett, Alfa Romeo Sprint with Bruce Mitchell, Lotus Europa.

The next meeting is on May 29th.

Tommy Gilmartin won the first race at Knockhill on 29th May.
Harry Simpson came second, followed by Raymond Boyd.
Simpson won the second, ahead of Gilmartin, with Andrew Graham third.

John Kinmond had his first races at the wheel of his recently built Rover SD1.

Jimmy Crow continues to lead the championship, followed by Tommy Gilmartin in second and Raymond Boyd third.

Next two races are at Donington on 2/3 July, part of the Masters Festival.

2 & 3 July

Thirteen drivers travelled to Donington for the Masters / BRSCC event.
An enjoyable experience for all, apart from some mechanical difficulties. Qualifying and both races were very well received by spectators who appreciated the quality of competition on display.

Tommy Gilmartin, Morgan +8, took first place in qualifying (1 minute 52 seconds), half a second faster than the Rover SD1 of John Kinmond, which looked superb in its’ period livery.
Raymond Boyd, Porsche 911, was very close behind, just ahead of Andrew Graham, Triumph TR7V8. Scott Brennan had his first outing in the Brayon Engineering Ford Mustang which he qualified fifth. Jimmy Crow’s Escort RS2000 completed the top six. Positions seven to ten were held by Jim Grant, Robin Benn, James Braid and Grant Allan. Eleventh fastest was newcomer, Alastair Baptie, in a Fiat X1/9, followed by Ian Blacklin and Ian Daltrey.

Gilmartin converted qualifying pole position to victory in the first race.
It was a hard fought win as Messrs. Kinmond, Boyd and Graham were only a few seconds adrift at the flag. Kinmond finished second on the road, but was demoted to third place, due to a time penalty for exceeding track limits. Brennan and Crow swapped places regularly, the former taking fifth place. Grant, Benn and Braid also had a closely fought race, finishing in that order. Ian Blacklin and Ian Daltery were the final two finishers. Sadly, Grant Allan and Alastair Baptie retired for the weekend due to clutch and engine problems respectively.
Fastest lap was 1 minute 51 seconds by John Kinmond.

Race two was just as entertaining as the first. At the end, positions one to four were separated by only three seconds; Gilmartin winning again, from Kinmond, Boyd and Graham. The next group of cars were even closer than race one, less than five seconds passed as drivers finished in order: Crow, Brennan, Grant, Benn and Blacklin. Ian Daltrey was next, followed by James Braid, who slowed near the end due to overheating.
Fastest lap was 1 minute 52 seconds by Andrew Graham.

17th July

Another fine day’s racing, in cold, windy conditions at Knockhill, with thirteen entries.
First event for William Conway, driving a Mini 1275GT. Also first time at Knockhill for Alastair Baptie, Fiat X1/9, following his debut in the championship
at Donington.
Tommy Gilmartin, Morgan +8, converted fastest qualifying to victory in race one.
Harry Simpson, Ginetta G4R, was just behind. This was replicated in race two,
Simpson posting the fastest lap in each race, the best being a time of 58.04 seconds.

Positions three to six were identical in each race:
3. Raymond Boyd, Porsche 911; 4. Andrew Graham, TR7V8;
5. Stan Bernard, Porsche 911; 6. Jimmy Crow, Ford Escort.

Midfield contests of note included those between Baptie and Ian Daltrey, Alfasud, and that of Bruce Mitchell, Lotus Europa with Ian Blacklin, Ford Capri.

Sadly, championship returnee, Howard Gordon, MG Midget, crashed on lap nine of the second race. He was taken to hospital with a neck wound and was being kept in for observation.

Tommy Gilmartin leads the championship from Jimmy Crow, with Raymond Boyd third.

Next event is at Knockhill on August 21st .

Harry Simpson, Ginetta G4R, won both races on 21st August.
Raymond Boyd, Porsche 911, was runner-up on both occasions.
John Kinmond took third place in race one in his Rover SD1 with
Andrew Graham, TR7V8, third in race two.

Drummond Bone made his first appearance of the year,
in an Alfa Romeo Guilia Sprint. There was also a first appearance for Craig Houston,
driving Alex. Montgomery’s MGBV8, finishing seventh in race one and sixth in race two.

With four races to go, Raymond Boyd is the championship leader, from Jimmy Crow
and Ian Daltrey.

Next event is at Knockhill on 11th September.

Would love to have seen the Super Tourers but have other commitments this weekend. Seventeen cars at last count, should be good racing.

Scottish Classics down on entries due to broken cars and several drivers
not competing due to visit to Spa the following weekend.

Another two wins for Harry Simpson at Knockhill on 11th September.
Lack of competitors in his class means that he can’t get close to leading the championship. Raymond Boyd is the current leader, by three points from Jimmy Crow.

The final two races are at Knockhill on 2nd October.

Raymond Boyd is the 2016 Scottish Classic Sports and Saloons Champion.
Two class wins on October 2nd secured his second title – a popular winner
amongst spectators and competitors. Despite his best efforts, runner-up, Jimmy Crow, was unable to overcome Boyd’s advantage prior to the last event.
Third overall went to Tommy Gilmartin.

Knockhill enjoyed some of the finest weather ever seen at an October event. Sunshine, minimal wind, almost tropical compared to the climate at some mid-season events.
Tommy Gilmartin won race one, followed by returnee, Andy Smith, Morgan +8,
with Harry Simpson third, Raymond Boyd fourth, Stan Bernard (Porsche 911) fifth and Bruce Mitchell (Lotus Europa) in sixth place.

Simpson won the second race from Gilmartin, followed by Smith, Boyd, Bernard and Mitchell.

Fastest lap of the day was 57.53 seconds by Harry Simpson.

Calum McRae had his first race in Classic Sports and Saloons, driving a TVR350i.
