GT40 Replica/Kit Car Experiences?
Does anyone here have any experiences with GT40 replicas or kit cars? Pros/cons? It's my absolute dream car and would love to buy or build one someday.

Hello,
I have a great deal of experience over many years and race a GT40 replica here in UK. You are fortunate to have a huge range of kit/parts as well as complete cars available to you nowadays. Rather than spending weeks typing info to you, your best bet to the world of GT40s, both original and replica, is to visit the GT40s.com website, and the whole world of these fabulous cars will unfold for you. GT. |

I've got one in progress. Started from a Polish knock-off of a KVA space frame and GRP shell, it's now on four wheels, after ten years of stop'n'start due to other projects. All suspension DiYed, except for some Ford front uprights.
If you want a quicker project - spend on a kit found as above. JOhn |

Thanks for bumping the thread JohnD, I hadn't seen it before. I'm now checking out the GT40s.com site!

A good friend has one. A truly wonderful car. The only word of caution I would offer to anyone thinking of building one is that to do it properly won't be cheap.

GT917 is correct, the GT40.com site is full of good guys and lots of info.
I have P/2264, one of the SPF rollers out of South Africa, a truly wonderful car! I have over 40K miles on mine and I just love it! |

Spent most of yesterday drooling over GT40's at Brands Hatch! The remainder of the day was spent drooling at a Porsche 917K which I have subsequently discovered is a replica.
I know what I'm going to be reading up about on Google tonight... |

Ah now then. The cost of a 917 replica would put the cost of a GT40 replica into perspective!

If you want more info on the 917 then gt917 from post #2 is your man, he was stressed and grumpy on Sunday so you wouldn't have got much sense out of him then, any other time he's a jolly friendly chap with a mindful of information.

Its his car? Ah, hence the avatar picture! I think I saw the driver beside the car when I was looking round it at the end of the day. Bloody shame it wasn't out for a few more laps as it was easily my fave car of the day. |

Graham has been having a few mysterious electrical problems with it over the last couple of races, mind you I was quite disappointed to break a camshaft after eight laps of qualifying although luck and a kind uncle lending me his Mk1 Escort meant I got to race in the end.

Tim is right.
The weekend was a nightmare for me. The 917 starts and runs perfectly when static, but as soon as I started and had done just two laps in qualifying and the two races, the ECU would fail. Sending it back to manufactures next week to get it checked over. My replica GT40 has had a new engine built and I must concentrate now on getting it reinstalled. It has been totally reliable in every race for so many years = simple electrics |

At least you've got the GT40 as a runabout whilst you are getting the 917 sorted. |

Not a great picture...
...hopefully you can keep the car on track a bit longer next time so I can try and get a better one! Last edited by tbtstt; 24 Jun 2014 at 08:50. |

Thanks tbtstt, good picture.
problem traced eventually to a cracked battery cut-off switch which worked fine stationary but failed with use/vibration. Garcon, picture of my replica 40 in action. Your friends 40 looks great in white, but don,t think they look so good on those larger diameter wheels. |

Must admit I tend to agree on the wheels. I think he has a smaller more 'original' set too.
Looks superb in the Gulf colours .... but not quite as superb as the 917. |
