Frank_White should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
GP 2 cars are approximately 3 secs faster than the F3000 cars

I am curious as to the opinion of the more knowledgeable persons in this forum.

Is a 3 sec performance gain considered very signiicant?

I realise that a major goal of the new chassis was to encourage closer racing and more overtaking possibilities.

Another question I have is, how many seconds are F3000 cars away from F1 cars?

15-25 depending on the circuits

The GP2 will be faster still when it gets its definitive tyres.

The aim is to be about 7 to 10s off F1 pace next year.

True. But the GP2 car isn't fully developed yet, so there's more to come.

I think Lola will come out with a good package, no doubt.

I'd also have say I got impressed with the fit of the Judd V10 for the Superfund series car.

Yeah, they were down to 31s today. I was a bit surprised, then remembered GP2 is on grooves and they wont have the tire development F1 grooves do.

31''s eh? After all the hoo-hah about the new GP2 car still pretty poor, definitive tyres or not. The old Lola F3000 is a bit of a handfull around quick corners and this new car is barely quicker at Barcelona?? Keeping in mind the Nissan world series pole time 1.29.8 set on 1 timed lap without tire warmers they have got some work to do...

What I meant is that the GP2 (Dallara) is not as developed as the current F3000 Lolas. Plus the SF car, also Lola, got a strong package. I worked for years with Lolas and now because of the changes we are switching to Dallaras.

Currently F3000... but can't say what it will be next year. Up to the boss

Oh boy... hope the regulations + technical package for GP2 get ready soon!

You can expect the new GP2 car to be 4-5 seconds faster than this years current Lolas. The current Lolas have more than 3 years of development on them compared to a few months for the GP2 car and all ready it is 3 seconds faster. If you want to compare cars you must compare in same conditions. Second day fist sessions are always the fastest with more rubber and cooler ambient temperatures. If the GP2 car didnt have problems on the second morning you can expect at least sub 1:28s around Barcelona.

Having said that this years F3000 isnt faster than the 99 model. The Avon tires are 1 lap wonders in the current spec. The first flying lap is all you get around barcelona. They did this just to show it is faster than the older model. But average race time it isnt any faster as the older avons are more consistant.

Russfeld,

Im not talking about new parts etc. Im talking about setupwise, experience with the car, knowing how to get 100% out of the tyres at each circuit. In 3 years, you normally expect 1-2 secs with the same car.

Most of us dont realize how conditions affect lap times and end up comparing apples with oranges. For example this years F3000 cars, same day on new tyres, afternoon sessions comparing to the morning can be anywhere from 3 to 4 seconds difference.

Yes, but this year at every circuit except Barcelona and Monaco, where the weather conditions have been the same as two years ago, the lap times have been slower than two years ago.

There we go again... not understanding the situation. If you remember two years ago there was 2 qualifying sessions and since the last two years the first session is free practice and after the qualifying. Qualifying times were faster there then because they were able to use formula one rubber right after the formula 1 qualifying. For example in France Thomas Enge pole position time was set on his first time lap.

They changed the format to allow new drivers to have a fair chance rather than favouring the experience drivers. If you havent notice. Free practice times are faster than qualifying times since they change the format. As by the time the second session is on all the formula 1 rubber is picked up all ready.

Im not in favour of any championship I just want to point out the facts.

Yes, Free Practice times are faster than this year's qualifying times - but they are still not faster than qualifying times from two years ago.

This can be explained by the fact that F1 qualifying only gives each car half the amount of laps, so there will be less rubber on the track.

...but that should be cancelled out if there was any significant development being done to the car.
