1988 Dunlop RAC British Touring Car Championship - Discussion & Results

Time for the 1988 season. Information gathered from mainly late 1988 Autosport magazines including their most valuable seasonal review, a few YouTube clips, a points chart I was mailed some time ago and various pictures to be found around the net and not least other threaths on ten-tenths and TNF. I'm looking forward to your contributions - they're needed - but should make for some time well spend.

1988 Dunlop RAC British Touring Car Championship intro
Same class structure as in 1987:
Class A: above 2500 cc
Class B: 2001-2500 cc
Class C: 1601-2000 cc
Class D: under 1600 cc

Points for the top-6 in each class according to 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 points with an additional point for fastest lap in the race.

Late in 1987 it was announced that highlights of six races would be transmitted by the BBC, while Ford announced a bonus for top-3 overall results by Ford drivers with £15,000 for first, £10,000 for second and £5,000 for third – can't find my reference for the Ford-part, though.

13 races on the schedule, but ended on 12 with the cancellation of the Birmingham round.

My notes tell me that the Jerry Mahony Arquati RS500 was run by Roger Dowson, who, as I have now learned, was involved with the Austin Rover Sport MG Metro Turbo programme of 1983-1984.

The Bob Sands RS500 has been identified on the RS500 forums as a CC Motorsport entry. As David Cook ran the 1989 Vauxhall Astra GTE BTCC campain, would that mean that 1988 was the final year of CC Motorsport?

Jesper, whether it helps much I don't know but i've added a few things in bold for you. The opening round was held on the old club circuit, which was quite rare for the BTCC!

I think you are right about the Sands CC car. It didn't do the whole season, in fact I think it withdrew after the first handful of rounds. Anyone confirm this?

The circuit used was the Club circuit, measuring 2.587km. The race length was 25 laps. These results are courtesy of Motorsport, who carried top 10 results for the BTCC throughout 1988 and half-way through 1989:

A brief synopsis of the race from the review video:

Rouse makes a fantastic start from the pole to comfortably lead fellow-front-row-starter Mahony into Copse. Bristow spins out of third into retirement at Copse and was followed into the gravel by a fast-starting Mike O'Brien, who would extract himself and rejoin at the tail of the field. Rouse's comfortable lead evaporates exiting Copse on lap 2 as a turbo hose blows off. The Kaliber Sierra would rejoin the race after repairs, setting the fastest Class A lap on the way to 16th place at the finish.
New-leader Mahony is passed by a flying Goode, the Listerine Sierra appearing to have more power than the white Arquati car. However, it's all for naught as Goode's car retires with what appear to be engine problems. From there, Mahony carries on to a comfortable win. Frank Sytner takes the Class B win, whilst James Kaye (Volkswagen Golf GTi) and Phil Dowsett take the C and D class honors.


Jesper, I should be able to help you out a bit with results and colour for 1988. I have the review video, a full collection of Motorsport from 1988, and full results for rounds 6, 7, 8 and 9 from Autosport.

Added some info - lap times, positions and reasons for retirement. Confirmed that Wallis was a Drury entry, and Dowson ran Mahony's car. Hall's given time was that of Alan Minshaw. Rouse was a classified finisher.

Bristow went off at the first corner on cold tyres, Mike O'Brien flat-spotted his tyres avoiding him. 2 laps later a tyre burst, putting him out.
Rouse was leading, but a turbo hose worked loose and he had to pit on two occasions to have it re-attached.

Everything will be appreciated, chunterer. Seeing the Dowson/Arquati entry for Jerry Mahony is in fact more userfriendly than just Dowson. Since I always associate Laurence Bristow with the Rouse-Labatt's car of 1989-90, it is nice to be made aware that he raced in CAM Shipping colours in 1988. I will give this a try in my next installment.

Yes, it disappeared mid-season, and was up for sale for the latter part of the year. Ad says 4 events from new - it was built new for '88, and had a Rouse engine and suspension.

I think it reappeared in '89 as the first JQF/Fina car for Gerrit van Kouwen (before they brought out the "active" car mid-season) and also reappeared in '90 for a handful of outings with Stuart Donnan, before he Thundersaloon-ed it.


Other info for round 1 - Karl Jones was supposed to be there in the Asquith RS500, but a dock strike stopped some wheels arriving, and the team didn't think the car would be competitive on what it had (16s, as Avon tyres wouldn't fit the 17s they had) so they delayed until round 2 at Oulton. Geoff Kimber-Smith didn't have his Corolla ready in time - suspension issues.

Mike O'Brien was planning to debut an updated ex-Brock VL-SS Commodore at round 2.

A brief synopsis of the race from the review video:

Rouse makes a fantastic start from the pole to comfortably lead fellow-front-row-starter Mahony into Copse. Bristow spins out of third into retirement at Copse and was followed into the gravel by a fast-starting Mike O'Brien, who would extract himself and rejoin at the tail of the field. Rouse's comfortable lead evaporates exiting Copse on lap 2 as a turbo hose blows off. The Kaliber Sierra would rejoin the race after repairs, setting the fastest Class A lap on the way to 16th place at the finish.
New-leader Mahony is passed by a flying Goode, the Listerine Sierra appearing to have more power than the white Arquati car. However, it's all for naught as Goode's car retires with what appear to be engine problems. From there, Mahony carries on to a comfortable win. Frank Sytner takes the Class B win, whilst James Kaye (Volkswagen Golf GTi) and Phil Dowsett take the C and D class honors.


Jesper, I should be able to help you out a bit with results and colour for 1988. I have the review video, a full collection of Motorsport from 1988, and full results for rounds 6, 7, 8 and 9 from Autosport.
Thank you, William, for the review and your results table - that would be my preferred method of presenting the results too, but haven't found a way around that yet, but will give it a go soon. Didn't know there was a 1988 video review? Of all rounds?

Yes, you'll find some on ebay I suspect. I had mine from new and it's quite a long runner!!

There's some '87 reviews that have been converted to DVD on there too, likely home converted versions but the one I brought plays properly. That might also be of interest to you.

The Bob Sands CC Motorsport car only did the first four rounds AFAIK- (3rd at Silverstone, DNFs at Oulton & Thruxton, and 6th, sharing with Richard Jones at the Donington 1-hour race) but I don't think it was seen again- unless he appeared at the British GP support, which I think is one that's missing from my notes of 1988's results.
IIRC, a good pic of the car (which I think is only about the second pic I've ever seen of it on the web!) turned up on the Autosport Nostalgia Forum's RS500 thread a few weeks back- think I posted a link to it in 'our' RS500 thread.

Thank your updates, Tim. From your grid I would assume 24 cars and drivers were present for the opening round of which 23 started. Looking back a year there were 15 starters with an additional 3 non-starters, making 1989 looking a lot healthier.

Four Rouse-run Sierras appeared in '88- the Kaliber pair for Rouse and Guy Edwards, Pete Hall's ICS car (taken over by Robb Gravett & Mark Hales after mid-season) and the CAM Shipping car for Bristow. From memory, Bristow's car sometimes appeared on entry lists as being entered by 'Baynard Cars'
A (not particularly good) pic from the TT- I think the Shell Gemini backing might have been a one-off for this race, as Gravett shared the car with Bristow

I have quietly been guessing that the few Bob Sands/CC Motorsport races of 1988 could have been due to the dissolvement of the Peter Clarke and David Cook partnership, as Cook was race ready with Vauxhall for 1989.

Looking through late '88 Autosports that same shot seems to appear (haven't checked) in b/w in a sales advert. "Our" RS500 thread as the original, the first

The times I put in my post are the ones given in Autosport. What I meant was that the time you originally had for Hall finsihing 3rd in class was actually that of Minshaw, 4th in class, and Hall had been right on the tail of the Prodrive BMWs.

I'm sure you're right about that- I think there were a few one-off sponsorship deals here and there in the early rounds, but the car was predominantly plain white until the Istel backing came back. I've seen a pic of it recently in that state, in a contemporary Piper Cams magazine ad- Piper were the most visible sponsor on the car early-season, and stayed on the car after the return of Istel

I should have known better, as I half remember Tim Harvey telling the story of Istel becomming a sponsor during the 1988 season in an Autosport interview late 1980's/early 1990's. Don't know why Istel dropped Harvey in the first place as they seemed to go very well together in future deals, but had it something to do with Austin Rover products vs. Ford? Another vague memory, that is.

I will continue my current format of presenting the results but as there seems to be a lot more info around than for the earlier years, I will re-post them with the info gathered, when the dust is about to settle.

They hadn't dropped Harvey totally, as they were still backing the Harvey/Hodgetts Tiga in the BRDC C2 sportscar series- though that of course used an Austin Rover engine. Must admit, I hadn't thought of the ARG v Ford angle to the question. They did sponsor his outings in the Charles Ivey Tiga-Porsche at Le Mans though IIRC

Other info for round 1 - Karl Jones was supposed to be there in the Asquith RS500, but a dock strike stopped some wheels arriving, and the team didn't think the car would be competitive on what it had (16s, as Avon tyres wouldn't fit the 17s they had) so they delayed until round 2 at Oulton. Geoff Kimber-Smith didn't have his Corolla ready in time - suspension issues.

Mike O'Brien was planning to debut an updated ex-Brock VL-SS Commodore at round 2.
Missed this post first time out. Was those wheels French Gotti rims? They were used on a fair few rally Cossies, but rare on the circuits.

GK-S was a DNA then

Then again, ARG and Porsche were never really in competition for the average consumer car market like ARG and Ford. But it also begs the question, what was Istel dealing in? They had sponsored the high profile Tourist Trophy from mid-1980s to the comma in 1988.
