F2002 - State of the art
Loved the pictures of all the team bosses crowded around the new Ferrari on the grid. All jealous as hell! And boy did they get a scare - Bridgestone were well off for that race and Michael still blew the Michelin cars off the track.
If there was a merest chink in the F2002 armour it would be on braking/downshifting. All weekend Schumi was having "moments" just prior to turn-in. He gathered it all up, cool as you like every time of course! Anyone have a good guess what the control by Schumacher's right knee was for? From the on-board he could be seen to reach down and adjust something-or-other quite often during a lap. Could be differential control, or brake balance... all things usually catered for with a steering wheel button. Maybe the car is still not quite finished... steering wheel cannot accomodate all of the F2002 features? Maybe it was the stereo. If they get a win at Imola (also a potential Michelin race), it could be game over after four races! Oh - and it looks the absolute business! |

Yeah it does look great, but I preferred the low nose. I'm beginning to get used to the white spaces on the car as well...
Although I didn't expect the Williamses to keep up with him. As for the bosses crowding around- Radio5 said it was more like them getting their own back for the Ferrari spy at Malaysia... made me laugh. Brazil was quite a funny GP really... |

The F2002 will have a new nose by Spain. Once again, it's "revolutionary".

Glen it was the brake bias. we heard on ITV from martin brundle that he did it in the middle of Juncao - theeee hardest corner of that lap (because you need a good run out) on his fastest lap!!! so one-handed around the hardest corner on the track to get right, he adjusted his brake balance.
yeah but i noticed when in the race he did it on T1, he ran over a bit of dry ice - quite clear to see as it was a massive white blob in the middle of the track steaming as well!!! |

Apparently the new nose has some sort of device which allows them to effectivly have a ground effect for the nose.

I think that the F2002 is so good that Schumacher should win with it without the extra help the FIA insist in giving him. Not to mention the enforcement of the slave clause. Will he do it?

I dont believe the F2002 is as good as it was built out to be. Williams should still be able to fight hard for the title.

Yeah, I was expecting a whitewash, but it's not the case... yet.

If a BRIDGESTONE (yes BRIDGESTONE) car could win at Brazil, it's invincible. Reliability is its only chink. Not that it had much trouble on Sunday.
The "ground effect" front wing is called the "segull wingspan" around Fiorano. So, we musn't forget that this is NOT the "real" F2002. THERE ARE NEW BITS TO COME!! Juan: that brake balance adjust was... phenomenal. Whatever anyone says, the man is a genius and the greatest F1 driver ever. In a classic car. rumour has it there were literally gasps from some of the drivers in the pitlane when the lap was replayed. I mean, IMAGINE the looks of horror in.... I dunno.... the McLaren garage for example?? |

I THINK they mentioned it on ITV's F1 coverage. Could well have been Brundle.

This WAS brudle. He mentioned on race commentary that he'd bought up the subject with some drivers of micheal adjusting brake ballance on a qualifying lap & they were all stunned!
Oh ,by the way every car on the grid uses ground effect to some extent. |

Oh, of course. But (and I don't know the details or anything) this wing is supposed to be amazing. The diagrams I've seen are of a wing that... shall we say.. looks like nothing else on the grid. I THINK they might have been in Autosport.

And then there's the matter of the rear wing. One of the things that keeps modern F1 cars from looking truly modern and beautiful is the rear wing. In this month's Automobile magazine, Robert Cumberford analyzes the 2002 Ferrari. Here's his description of the back wing: "Ancient Chinese box-kite arrangement for rear downforce is rule-constrained, hard to improve."
Wouldn't it be nice if the FIA freed up the regs a bit so that the aerodynamicists could have a go at that monstrosity at the back of the car? Then let's change the grooved balloons that look like truck tires into real racing rubber. |
