Sir Frank Williams:
“There are definitely people available who’ll do a much better job for the company than I can. That’s without question. I’m looking for someone to take my place. I’ve got to. It’s common sense. It could be one day, one year, two years, I don’t know. But my time is coming. Sooner rather than later, within five years, I’ll kick myself upstairs. Hopefully I’ll be clever enough to recognise the right time, and the right person, to take over.” http://www.telegraphindia.com/104071...ry_3488239.asp Last edited by Led ZeppF1; 13 Jul 2004 at 03:19. |

It;s not too surprising.
Everyone has to stop one day. Michael Schumacher, Ron Dennis, Bernie, Max... every team/organisation/sports would face that day where one important person retires and hand over the job to somebody else. I would think that the moving of Head to a different role within the team is the start of a series of changes Williams/Head has planned for the team. They would use the time they have left in the sports to choose and trial suitable candidates whom they believe could run the team well in the future. Being around to be able to "judge" these new people would allow them to retire in peace when the day comes where they feel they had enough. |

He's one tough SOB. Reading that article it makes me wonder if he hasn't looked at William's poor performance this year and it's inability to beat Ferrari as his own failings.

Within five years he says - so don't expect anything to happen soon.
Frank's son Jonathan may well be being groomed for the job. |

I suspect he is taking defeat personally, as Snrub says. Highly competitive and focussed guys like Frank usually do. This season might be especially galling because Williams ought to have all the right ingredients - great motors, technically advanced cars, a theoretically good driving line-up and plenty of experience.
The point about his son Jonathan is interesting - rumours suggest that he will be invovled in a GP2 team alongside Paul Jackson of Den Bla Avis fame, and many instantly linked this to speculation that he mght keep the Williams family in F1. In general, Frank seems keen to keep the name and basic team heritage alive, adn not sell out to BMW. It deeply upset Ken to see the Tyrrell name disappear, and be dragged thtough the mud in its final year - I doubt Frank could face the same thing. |

As Max Mosely pointed out, F1 team principals are largely an ageing population, therefore it's inevitable that we will see major changes in the leadership of nearly all the teams in the next 5 years or so.

I think he would sell to BMW, but they are not buying...

IN any case I think he'll try and retire as a winner, or at least, as a strong contender.

This could, if all rumour are true, be a big swan song year in 2005. JV and Mika back driving around in a WIlliams, Newey leaving, Jordan changing ownership and Patrick Head moving to one side (maybe to take over the mantel from Frank?) and Michael will stop one day (?) so even if half of these are true it will shift the balance of F1. I hope even if Frank retires he stays as figure head for two reasons, one in terms of personality it is nice to have someone say as they think and because he is a tough cookie when it comes to people messing with F1. Secondly I think him staying would keep stability and be someone for the team to look up to, in a way like Jackie is at Jaguar.

Frank has been in the game a very long time now - 35 years. He's still as hungry for success as he was in his first year, but age and the pressure will be catching up with him now. I won't be surprised if he starts winding down his F1 career within the next few years.

What colour specs are you wearing there Bonomi? The only race in whcih they bet everyone but Michael was Malaysia, and they came reasonably close in Bahrain. Since then they've slid back dramatically.

Everyone wants to go out on top though, not when their best days are behind them - Frank will surely feel that if he leaves now, it'll look like he's backing out of a fight, which is the wrong legacy for a man who once conducted team business from a telephone box because his phone line had been cut off, who battled back from a life-threatening and disabling accident, and has repeatedly built and won championship challenges.

Stepping down?
Anyway, he's an old man - why shouldn't he consider living at home and growing roses? It can't be easy/much fun travelling around the world when you're paralysed from the chest down. Fair play to him - he's given it a good go and needs a few years to enjoy his squillions. Not even a big deal, really. |

He's in his 60s. In work terms (and compared to me) he's an old man.
Compared to someone more your age perhaps, maybe he isn't. |
