front engined formula 3 / f1200
i have a situation were i have a car with a lot of history but i cant find a gearbox to put in it that isnt too long its a 1960's milmor mk5 that ran side valve 1172 then f1200 and has the possibility to run historic formula 3 1000cc as a 997 pre cross flow but i don't know what gearbox to put in it as it needs too be small like a austin 7 but stronger as even as a 1172 it has 100bhp and when you dump the clutch it spits it out of gear but i was hoping to change it to a 997 but i still have the problem of a gearbox as it is front engined.
thanks frazer |

I'm building a sidevalve 1172 and it runs a 7 gearbox, I know nothing about them, but they are small! 100bhp sounds rather a lot for a sidevalve, however, it is possible to shorten the tail shaft/housing and use a Ford box . . . they're lovely gearboxes and can take competition use, if the operator knows how to use them and the slippy bit in the middle!

Can't see a 100e producing 100 bhp ! but I suppose if that's what you have been told.
Joe is right, there was even a 5 speed short tail shaft kit that was manufactured by someone as a mate ran one in an Anglebox. |

Yes that will cope with your !00 hp ! a piece of cake to work on and spares still available, is it a straight cut/helical/ hub or dog box ?

a std synchro box will cope with a sidevalve no sweat, I don't see any point in using SC or a dog box with that kind of power, HRS guys use std gearboxes, the 1500 precrossflows make 130-140 bhp and twinks 160ish. all service parts are available now.
love to know how you get 100 bhp from a sidevalve, the one I'm doing made 75 apparently . . . it came for rebuild in with a 3 piece crank and fully vented block! |

You could always use a 1340 Classic crank Joe, as you know they are fully vented from new

Yes I thought it was Hewland but I didn't want to say that as I would have been shot down in flames if I was wrong.
I think that Richard Evans had one in his Anglia that I believe Neville Smith took over, didn't Dan Cox finish up with it ? |

No, that car ran a Jack Knight dogbox - same as I run in the Cortina. The person with the Hewland (I've forgotten his name) bought Ronnie Fielding's Anglia for his son to race - from Essex, I think.

Hewland did make the 5 speed, for the 1L screamer Anglias I think, a customer of mine has one in Belgium ( minus a gear) it struggles to cope with torque, so marginal on a 1300 apparently
