Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 (Group A)
Time to kick off chassis archive for the RS500 which was built by Andy Rouse, Eggenberger, Graham Goode, Dick Johnson, Don Smith, Wolf etc.
All are welcome to add what they know from the main thread in following format: Builder, year, chassis number/desgination, drivers, sponsors/colours, results etc.. Example: Andy Rouse Engineering ARE FSC 871. Built 1987. BTCC ICS Andy Rouse car. 6 races, Andy won x, Win Percy won 1 round. Later sold onto x in Australia, ran in ATCC between 1989-92. in ANZ colours. Drivers Alan Moffat, etc.. Then sold onto xy... I will edit, tidy up as we go so don't worry!! Excellent stuff VIVAGT, many thanks.
I'll have a pop at starting the Rouse chassis' I will return to add/amend where necessary. Andy Rouse Engineering/Rouse Sport Circa 30 cars built between 1987-90. Assumption is 5 cars 1987, 6-10 cars '88, 6-10 cars '89 and 6-10 cars '90. But would 'kits' have been given full chassis numbers, like a lot of the cars that went to Australia? Notes from Martin Johnson: 1/ 88 cars had ali cages which were later outlawed and since by the time this happened the cars where moved on to there new owners so most have bolt in steel cages now fitted. 2/ The 89/90 Labatts Harvey and Bristow cars where new built cars from new shells for the '89 season with a seven figure sponsorship fund - the deal was two supply and run the two cars for two seasons. 1987 Cars ARE RSC 0187 Andy Rouse's 1987 BTCC ICS RS Cosworth and latterely upgraded to RS500 spec (TBC) ARE RSC 0287 ARE RSC 0387 TBC ARE RSC 0487 TBC ARE RSC 0587 William Dale confirms that this was car #17 at the 1987 Spa 24 Hrs (red, Telemoustique) and #9 at Bathurst and Calder that year, 1988 Cars ARE RSC 0188 Andy Rouse's 1988 BTCC Kaliber RS500 - TT Winner sharing with Alain Ferte and sold onto Peter Brock for use in 1989 ATCC (TBC) NOTE: If this is Rouse's 88 Kaliber car then it is the car driven by Peter Brock for most of 1989 ATCC. However, it was not this car that was re-shelled, it was the other ex-Rouse Mobil Sierra that may have been re-shelled. This was the car Robb Gravett drove in 1988 in ICS colours; possibly Pete Hall's car from the year before? ARE RSC 0288 TBC. Guy Edwards' Kaliber BTCC car? ARE RSC 0388 Cam Shipping liveried Sierra that Lawrence Bristow used in '88 BTCC & TT. ARE RSC 0488 ARE RSC 0588 ARE RSC 0688 All TBC. 1989 CARS ARE RSC 0189 Presumably Andy's Kaliber BTCC car? TBC ARE RSC 0289 Guy Edwards Kaliber BTCC car? TBC ARE RSC 0389 Confirmed as Tim Harvey's 1989 & 90 BTCC Labatt's car. Possible Macau entry TBC ARE RSC 0489 TBC, need info from M Johnson who owned this car at one point. Presumably Bristow's 89/90 Labatts's car? 0589 0689 0789 TBC 1990 Cars Presumably Andy built himself a new car, in ICS colours for the BTCC? ARE RSC 0190 Last edited by chunterer; 3 Jun 2009 at 08:56. Reason: updating! |

DJR 4, 5 and 6.
Hi William and Chunterer,
We also own DJR 4, plus DJR 5 as you mentioned. DJR 6 is also in QLD and is in its 1992 livery and also in good condition. We have owned #4 since 1998, buying it from NZ. Its last public outing was the "Johnsons Vs Brocks" grudge race at the AGP in 2002. With DJ and SJ sharing driving duties. I think its pretty cool that 3,4,5 & 6, are all still local If Andy reads this, please come and say hello at the Goodwood FoS. It would be great to meet and chat DJR Sierra's! Cheers, Chris Bowden. +61 4382 69938. |

BTW, there is a DJR Promo Sierra on display down in Tassie somewhere too. It's a motoring museum of some sort.

Thanks Rob but that was just for illustration purposes, not a de facto chassis history. I'd better edit that!

No worries Chunterer, we also own the last B&H Sierra they built in 1990. Tony Longhurst and Alan Jones's did some crazy times in it during practice/ qualifying at the 1990 Bathurst (Both did 2.13.84's!). It was then sold to Gold Coast based Bolwell Racing and raced # 43 at Bathurst 1991 (DNF). It was log booked 1/8/1990 and only raced about 10-11 times in total. Last raced at Lakeside in either 1992 or 93 (Will have to check again, as 93 doesn't look quite right hey?) Cheers, Chris.

Further to William's DJR info, I believe,
DJR4 was the car used at the 90 Eastern Creek 500 (not DJR6). DJR6 was raced at Bathurst in 90 by Johnson & Bowe. In 91 Johnson raced DJR5 throughout the ATCC, Bowe starting the year in DJR6 while DJR4 was rebuilt. |

My understanding of the history of the other Sierras that raced in Australia. Those chassis numbers with an asterix (*) are not actual numbers, just numbers I have applied as a way of identifying each car.
Miedecke Motorsport At the end of 1986 Don Smith set up a new team. Smith had been appointed a Ford Motorsport dealer and many of the Australian Sierras would be built from shells sourced from Smith. At the end of 1987 Smith retired and a new team was formed, Miedecke Motorsport owned by Andrew Miedecke with Ross Stone as team manager. At the end of 1989 Miedecke closed the team and went to drive for the Peter Brock. Ross Stone went to manage Kevin Waldock’s Playscape Racing team on the Gold Coast, for whom the team had built a car in 1989. MM1* Built as a Rouse kit car and driven as #34 by Don Smith in rounds 1–5 of the ATCC. The car was sold to John Giddings who drove it for the rest of the year, but still in the same Oxo Supercube colours. Bruce Stewart joined Giddings for the enduros. For the 1988 ATCC the car was leased to Colin Bond running as #4 in Caltex colours. As part of the deal, was run as a 2nd Caltex car in the enduros with Giddings & Stewart driving as #44. Last raced by Giddings at the 1989 Adelaide GP as #15. MM2* Built as a Rouse kit car and sold to Andrew Miedecke before the beginning of the season. Raced throughout ATCC as #35 by Miedecke in Oxo Supercube colours. Destroyed by Don Smith in practice for the Sandown 500. Car was sold and rebuilt as a sports sedan by Mike Ceveri. MM3* Built to replace MM2 for Bathurst. Raced by Miedecke until the end of 87. Run as a customer car as #8 for Andrew Bagnall in 1988 ATCC. Bagnall was joined by Miedecke at Sandown and Pierre Dieudonne at Bathurst, Wellington and Pukekohe. Run as a customer car again 1989. Bagnall was joined by Graham Crosby for Bathurst and Miedecke for the Wellington and Pukekohe enduros. The car was mothballed until reactivated for the 1990 Sandown, Bathurst and Wellington races with Robbie Francevic joining Bagnall to race the car as #38. MM4* Built for the beginning of 1988 for Miedecke to race as #6 with Steve Soper co driving at Bathurst, Wellington and Pukekohe and Crosby at the Mount Fuji 500. Was Miedecke’s 89 car until destroyed in round 3 of the ATCC at Lakeside. MM5* Built to replace MM4, debuting at round 6 at Sandown. Miedecke was joined by Bagnall driving to victory in the Oran Park 250 and by Charlie O’Brien at Sandown and Bathurst. May have been taken to the Brock team when Miedecke moved there in 1990. MM6* Built as a customer car for Kevin Waldock debuting at round 8 of the ATCC at Oran Park in July 1989 as #55. Bryan Thompson co drove at Oran Park, Sandown and Bathurst. Raced by Waldock in ATCC until the end of 92 as #28. Mike Preston co drove in 1990 at Sandown and Bathurst, Bagnall at Eastern Creek in 1990, Brett Peters at Sandown and Bathurst in 1991 and 1992, and Crosby at Wellington in 1991. Tony Longhurst Racing At the end of 1987 with Frank Gardner having closed the JPS team after BMW decided to transfer their support to Peter Brock, Tony Longhurst set up a new team on the Gold Coast, with Frank Gardner coming on board as team manager and with the Amatil sponsorship. TLR1* Assembled as Rouse kit car for the beginning of 88, painted in Freeport colours as #3. Raced in 88 enduros as #25 in Benson & Hedges colours with Tomas Mezera co driving. Sold at end of 88 to Ken Matthews and run as a customer car by Colin Bond, racing in Caltex colours. Bond may have used it in the odd race in 89. Garry Rogers joined Matthews for the enduros. Matthews raced in some 1990 races including the Eastern Creek 500 with son John. The 1988 Bathurst winner was purchased by Amatil and donated to the Bathurst museum in 1994. TLR2* Assembled as LHD car during 1988. Was in the garage at Bathurst, but team elected to stick with TLR1. Raced by Longhurst throughout 1989 with Neville Crichton co driving at Oran Park, Sandown, Bathurst, Wellington and Pukekohe. Raced by Longhurst in 1990 ATCC. TLR3* & TLR4* At the end of 1988 2 Wolf Racing built RS500s were purchased. These had been imported into Australia earlier in the year by Ian Paxton. One had appeared at the Winton round for Robbie Francevic. The liberal interpretations of the rules in Europe, didn’t sit well with the Australian scruitneers, it was allowed to start but for no points and wasn’t seen again. After being rebuilt to to comply with the rules, one was raced throughout 1989 by Neville Crichton with Alan Jones & Denny Hulme driving it in the enduros. Jones drove it in the 1990 ATCC, again being joined by Hulme for the enduros. It was raced by Gary & David Brabham at the 1990 Eastern Creek 500. The other served as a Test car, it appeared at Bathurst as such in 1989 & 1990, and was also driven in at the Waneroo round in 1990 by Crichton as #62. Both appeared at Bathurst in 1991, one as the #44 Brian Bolwell Racing car driven by Dave Barrow & Glen McIntyre the other as the #50 Bryan Sala & Graham Lusty car. On was later sold to Peter Hills and converted at 2 litre non turbo specs. It was sold to Sydney’s Neville Simmons and restored as it raced by Longhurst. TLR5* Built for the 1990 enduros only raced by Longhurst until the end of the year. Sold to Brian Bolwell who raced it at the Lakeside ATCC round, Bathurst with Arthur Abrahams and Wellington with Dave Barrow. As mentioned above is now owned by Chris Bowden. |

Caltex CXT Racing
Since the beginning of Group A in Australia, Colin Bond had raced Alfa Romeos initially the GTV and in 1987 the 75. With Alfa pulling out of motor racing, he decided to go down the Sierra route leasing a car from John Giddings for the 1988 ATCC. CXT1* Debuted at the Oran Park 250 with Alan Jones co driving as #4. Bond raced this car until the end of the 1992 ATCC. From the beginning of 1990 it was entered as #8. Bruce Stewart co drove in 1989, and Graham Crosby in 1990 & 1991. For Bathurst 1992 it was entered as #7 for Terry Bosanjak & Peter Hopwood. It was sold to Ron O’Brien and used as a sports sedan. It is currently being restored back to Group A specs. CXT2* A spare shell that had been sitting around for a number of years, was built up as #8 for Bond & John Smith to race at Bathurst in 1992 and Bond at the Adelaide GP. Allan Moffat Enterprises Allan Moffat had been Ford’s flag bearer in Australia throughout the 1970’s. After Ford pulled funding, Moffat switched to Mazda RX7s with success in 1981, but with the advent of Group A they too pulled out. After a year on the sidelines in 1985 Moffat joined forces with former Holden arch-rival Peter Brock and spent much of 1986 in Europe. After the Holden Brock split, Moffat purchased a Commodore from HDT and entered the WTCC. On a shoestring budget he and John Harvey won round 1 after the M3s were all disqualified and went on to finish a fine 4th at the Spa 24 hour. But realising turbo power was the way forward he cancelled his plan to race the Commodore at Bathurst and Calder and did a deal with Andy Rouse to get a run in the Sierra using ARE RSC 0587 as mentioned above. EGMO x/xx For 88 Moffat procured a fully fledged Eggenberger RS500. It was a testament to Moffat’s shrudeness as nobody in the world had been able to get a customer Eggenberger Ford. It arrived in time for round 4 of the ATCC. Moffat raced it throughout the year being joined by Gregg Hansford to win at Sandown with Klaus Neidzweidz joining the pair for Bathurst. Moffat raced it in the 1989 ATCC, with Hansford & Pierre Dieudonne racing it at Bathurst. Moffat then co drove it with Neidzweidz to victory at Mount Fuji in November 1989 in his final race as #39. Hansford raced it in the first 5 ATCC races, before the team withdrew to conserve funds. Hansford was joined by Neidzweidz for Sandown & Mount Fuji (the latter as #91) and Dieudonne for Bathurst. It was raced at Bathurst in 1991 by Gary Brabham & Steve Miller and in 1992 by Charlie O’Brien & Brabham. EGMO 7/89 Moffat purchased a 2nd Eggenberger Sierra. It supposedly only ever had 4 race starts, Bathurst 89 & 90 with Neidzweidz & Frank Biela, 91 with O’Brien & Gianfranco Brancatelli and 92 with Neidzweidz & Hansford. Murray Carter Murray Carter had been running a Nissan Skyline DR30 for a few years in Group A. But despite having been racing cars for 35 years he still wanted to move forward. MC1* Built as a Rouse kit car, debuting at the 88 Oran Park 250 as #14. Raced it in the 88 enduros with Steve Masterton, John Mann in 1989 and Matt Wacker in 1990. He last raced the car at the Adelaide GP in 1990. Mark Petch Motorsport Mark Petch had been involved in Group A in Australia since it started at the beginning of 1985. He imported a Volvo 240 for Robbie Francevic to drive with a great deal of success, ultimately winning the 1986 ATCC. In the leadup to Bathurst 1987 he had purchased the Johnny Cecotto CiBiEmme M3. MPM1* For Bathurst 1988 Mark Petch bought a Wolf Racing Sierra. The car had been driven for much of the 1988 season by Armin Hahne. After Hahne & Harald Grohs drove it at the Silverstone TT it was shipped to Australia. Hahne came out to drive the car with Petch regular Robbie Francevic at Bathurst and Wellington. Francevic raced it an a few ATCC rounds in 1989, with Gianfranco Brancatelli joining him at Bathurst, Wellington and Pukekohe. In 1990 Brancatelli raced the car with Rob Gravett at Bathurst and Wellington. It was raced at Wellington by Kayne Scott with Brett Riley in 1991 and Greg Murphy in 1992. This car is still owned by Mark Petch. Advantage Racing Peter Brock bought 2 Andy Rouse cars at the end of 1988, ARE RSC 0188 as suggested above and one other. ARE RSC 0188 & ARE RSC 0xxx Purchased by Peter Brock at the end of 1988. During the 1989 ATCC one was driven by Brock as #05, the other by Brad Jones as #105. The Jones car was damaged in a testing accident by Barry Sheene. Brock & Brad Jones shared the remaining car in the Oran Park 250. This was driven by Jones with Mark Larkham at Sandown, Paul Radisich at Bathurst and Tony Noske at Wellington and Pukekohe. For the 1990 ATCC Miedecke raced the 2nd Brock car, this could have been either Brock’s 89 car or Miedecke’s own 89 car, one way or the other a 3rd car for Tony Noske appeared at round 2 of the ATCC, being one of the ex Rouse cars. The car Miedecke had been using was damaged in a rollover at round 7, and Miedecke moved to the car Noske had been using. At Sandown and Eastern Creek it was entered for Charlie O’Brien and David Parsons, with Miedecke joining them for Bathurst. It was raced by Parsons & Kevin Waldock at Wellington. AR1* A new car was debuted at Sandown with Brock joined by Radisich before Andy Rouse came out for Bathurst. Brock again shared the car at Wellington and Pukekohe with Radisich. Brock raced it throughout 1990, being joined by Andrew Miedecke at Sandown, Eastern Creek and Wellington and at Bathurst by Rouse. Glenn Seton Racing Glenn Seton formed a team in 1989 with the Philip Morris sponsorship that Nissan no longer wanted. GSR1* & GSR2* Built for the beginning of the 89 ATCC. The car was heavily damaged at Round 3 Lakeside. A new car (chassis RS155 log book V7467 issued 19 May 89) was built in time for round 6. Seton was joined for Sandown by John Goss. From here the chassis history becomes a bit cloudy. For Bathurst there were 2 cars, whether the original was rebuilt or a 3rd chassis is unknown. Seton was joined by Alain Ferte and Goss by Tony Noske in the 2nd car. Seton campaigned one car in the ATCC in 1990 although he did use both chassis during the course of the year. The 2nd car was raced by Drew Price in rounds 6 & 7 and by George Fury in round 8. For Sandown Seton & Fury drove one car to victory, while for Bathurst Seton was paired with Price and Fury with David Sears. Seton was joined by Colin Bond for Eastern Creek with Fury & Price driving the 2nd car. In 1991 Seton again only ran one car. Seton ran with Gregg Hansford at Sandown and Bathurst, with the 2nd car entered at Bathurst for David Parsons & Wayne Park. In 1992, Seton expanded to run 2 cars for the full year with Park running the 2nd car throughout the ATCC. For the enduros, Seton moved to the new Falcon, with Parsons rejoining Park for Sandown and Bathurst. Both appeared at the Adelaide GP race at the end of 1992, #35 for Alan Jones and RS155 having been sold to Bob Tweedie as #79. Tweedie would go on to race the car in the sports sedan category. The ex Jones car was sold to Steven Ellery who converted it to 2 litre non turbo specs and raced it in the 1993 enduros and 1994 2 litre championship. At the end of 94 it too was sold to Tweedie who campaigned it in the 1995 2 litre championship. |

Love your work Anthony!
I'm sure Tony told us they only ever had 4 Sierra's, but I will ask the question again. Sorry to be misleading, the Sierra's are all owned by David Bowden. Cheers, Chris. |

Nice stuff, anthony81901! Just a couple of things:

In any case, Bagnall's car may have been re-shelled after Bagnall rolled it during practice for the '89 Sandown ATCC round. Quote:

I'll have to double check this, but ISTR that there was a way to tell the two cars apart. Something to do with the front tow-hook. Not sure if there were any other clearly visible differences. |

The LHD Longhurst cars are easy to tell apart by their airjack points. I am not sure which Creighton drove with all three on the track? I thought Longhurst only bought one of the Paxton-wolfe cars? Did the last Longhurst car run with yellow simmons? Does this mean they had the LHD '88 built car, two wolf cars and the lsat car built all at one time? sounds too many? It was definitely the Noske car rolled by Miedecke. Miedeckes car never competed as a Mobil car. I believe it was bought as Press or spare if needed. |

As all my research indicates and what makes sense is: 1-RHD Bathurst winner. 2-first lhd car built but not raced in '88 3- next LHD car for Jones and then 4-last car built late in '90 making 3 appear on track at one race. making a total of four B&H sierras used. |

There definitely must have been five Longhurst Sierras, because there were three cars present at Bathurst in '89, the two race cars plus a T-car. One was the car built by the Longhurst team in late 1988, the other two the ex-Paxton cars. Throw in the Bathurst '88-winner, and that late '90-build car, and there were five.
I thought I'd posted the article I'd found in Auto Action on Longhurst purchasing the two cars, but a quick search suggests that I didn't... |

The Barry Naismith 1988 Bathurst annual has Miedecke's car as new at the beginning of the year, with Bagnall having the car built for Bathurst 87, while The Great Race has them the other way around. Miedecke was operating on a fairly tight budget, so it would have made sense for the new car to go to Bagnall.
So if the Miedecke Motorsport car was not used by the Mobil team, presumably the Noske car was Brad Jones 1989 ATCC car, that Barry Sheene supposedly destroyed in testing. There were definately 5 B&H Sierras. At Bathurst 1989 the 2nd Wolf car was used as a T car (pictured in the 1990 Bathurst program), and again in 1990 (pictured on page 104 of The Great Race). The last car's log book was issued on 01 August 1990, so the 3 cars at the Waneroo round in June must have been the 88 LHD and 2 Wolf cars. The Wolf cars can be distinguished by having the airjack points to the right of the grill rather than in the centre. Also there was a picture in Auto Action in late 1990 of all 4 Sierras still owned by Longhurst when it was announced that the team were switching to BMWs. |

I had found that reference as well however both Miedecke and Ross Stone say that the Bagnall car was new for '88 and mad Andy stayed in the very quick and sorted car (remember it was only debuted at Bathurst). This seems to be confirmed by the fact that this new shell originally destined for Colin Bond went to Bagnall hence Bond using the '87 Giddings car for '88 ATCC. Quote:

Does this picture show 2 of the cars with the airjack point to one side? |

I don't have the picture readily at hand but definately remember that there were 4 B&H cars. But certainly the 20 and T25 cars at Bathurst in 1990 were the ex Wolf cars.
Correcting my post #15 on this thread, the 44 Bolwell car at Bathurst in 1991 was TLR2, not one of the ex Wolf cars. |

Had the honour of being on the track with the ex Damon Hill Sierra at Lakeside this weekend, along with watching DJR#6 getting a real good workout in the demo's. Woo-Hoo!! All the whooshing, popping and flame-blowing had me in a lather
