New Driver/New Team to join CART Next Year!?!?
From rpm.espn.com:http://espn.go.com/rpm/f1/2003/1001/1628067.html
Wednesday, October 1 Agent says CART an option for driver Reuters BUDAPEST -- Hungarian Zsolt Baumgartner is weighing his possibilities for next season in CART as well as Formula One, Hungary's official MTI news agency said on Wednesday. The Hungarian has raced in two grands prix for Jordan this year as a stand-in for injured British rookie Ralph Firman. MTI said Baumgartner could have a chance of landing a full-time Formula One drive with Jordan if he can raise enough sponsorship money. The agency quoted Baumgartner's manager, Tamas Frank, as saying that there was also an offer from a team which intended to enter the U.S. Cart series next year. Baumgartner became the first Hungarian to compete in Formula One at his home grand prix in Aug., retiring with an engine failure. He finished 11th at Monza in Italy on Sept. 13. A Jordan spokeswoman said the team had a lot of drivers under consideration. "We are looking for the best package commercially and technically," she said. "We're talking to everybody. It's in our interests to do so." Jordan's main driver is Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, who is leaving at the end of the season to join Sauber. |

And some of you thought Townsend Bell was bad.

Considering Baumgartner was thrown at the deep-end in Hungary, and barely had time to test before he was asked to sub for Firman again at Monza, I think Zsolt did rather well considering he WAS in a Jordan...

Jordan aside, he has managed to score 6 whole points in the 8 races he competed in at F3000, with an average finish of close to 9th. Looks like a guy who should spend another year in F3000 at best.

He's already spent nearly 3 years in F3000, and never did much. He really didn't appear to be anything special, and success in F3000 seems to be more useful in CART than F1. He looked respectable at Jordan, but no more than that.
On the positive side, a new car is a new car, he clearly wouln't be taking over a ride which would've otherwise gone to a talented guy with no sponsorship, and it might open up a new market. I guess all that outweighs any lack of talent he might have. |

Three years in F3000 already. Didn't know that. Thanks.
Hmm, well, I guess a new car is better then nothing, at least it fills the field. We can only hope the team continues to be interested and fields a better driver down the road. |

Whatever, he's at least as good as the Coyne drivers, so if he's paying his own way and can get a ride in Cart, good on him.

Some drivers aren't suited to F3000.
Mario Haberfeld never had a great time of things there but has done alright in CART. Then again, Mario's a former F3 champion and Zsolt wasn't too hot at that level either! |

Zsolt Baumgartner is one of the drivers rumored for a possible ride with a new team that may enter CART next year courtesy of one Wayne Taylor - he has his ex-Cadillac LeMans team behind him and has already purchased 5 Lolas. See the Silly Season page at 7G ?!
Hopefully this dream will materialize. zerO |

If you want to read a really discouraging summary of a driver's abilities and dire prediction for the future, go back a few years to the first year Jacques raced in Italy and read what they had to say about him. Pollock hid him away in Japan to learn how to drive, and he got back to North America only by accident (the promoter had wanted his UNCLE).
Yes there are untalented drivers who never develop into anything. But there are talented drivers that are just in the wrong place, the wrong car, or are personally in the wrong place in their development. Give the guy a chance to prove which group he belonged to. He may do very well in CART. |

In Zsolt's case, there were far too many wrong places. He looks more like the Euro version of Lavin than Bell.

Zsolt would be a much better addition to Champ Car racing than Boss, Lavin and co. He isn't too bad, he was credible at the GP's he raced in, albeit not sensational.

JVil at least managed to show some signs of talent in a feeder category (5 wins/6 poles in Atlantics) before making the jump into CART, instead of screwing around in midfield for 5 years with family Corona money.

I'm with Brian...
I'll believe the Taylor stories when I see a car take the grid. |

Poor Jacques couldn't even recognize any Formula One car except the one his father drove, and someone who drove with him in Japan (whom I happen to know) didn't think much of him even there -- and a lot of his cohort thought he never would have got a drive if he had been named Jim Newton and not Jacques Villeneuve. Nevertheless he did quite well for himself until greed got the better of him -- and I think we would all have been sorry if he'd accepted the label of loser and gone into ski racing as he planned.
You never know what you can do until you get the chance to try. |
